I think the OP was not surprised about them not knowing about Hiroshima _day_ but by them not knowing about _Hiroshima_, and the nuclear bombing of it.

Yes, to clarify, my friends (aged 84 and 62 respectively) had not ever heard of the actual bombing of Hiroshima, or what it represented in world history more generally.
And no, Hiroshima (d)ay is not a memorial day in Australia, but most years there will be greater media coverage as the anniversary approaches. This year especially being the 80th anniversary, there have bee a number of documentaries happening. So, to be honest, I have NO idea how these two had managed to remain oblivious for so long.

He even had a role in The Towering Inferno, back when disaster movies were going big. I think he survived. It’s been awhile.

There are a lot of nice things we can’t have because of our racist history. This is one of them.
Unfortunately, not having it may result in our also having a considerably more racist future than we would have otherwise. But we certainly couldn’t trust the current Powers that Be to write or administer the tests.

You find them boring; and I might also find them boring (though not because they don’t follow sports and rarely watch TV or movies, as that pretty well describes me also). I suspect, however, that they themselves are not bored.

In fact nobody can be trusted for that, qualified voting IS a bad idea, it’s just that sometimes the median voter makes you doubt it.

There was some show where the host did Guy on the street reporting and would ask questions any 8th grader should know. Never answered right.

My friend from childhood told me he was unaware that females usually have two ovaries. He didn’t notice this in any of our science classes but was relieved when his wife’s dr told him so. I expected too much as I thought this was common knowledge.

I can say I knew OJ as that football guy who hurdled thru the airport, but never saw him play football. Forgettable as an actor imo. And I was peripherally aware of the chase and trial but it didn’t draw me in to watch it all. Not a fan of televised murder trials.

Wow, I shouldn’t be reading these, the ignorance raises my blood pressure sky high. (Because I was never popular, I spent most of my spare time all my life reading, so am a repository of information on matters large and small.) In the 80’s husband and I played Trivial Pursuit with other couples who were hard pressed to venture one or two guesses per game….on the other hand, today I know nothing about Kanye West and his ilk, and have no idea how he could have gotten so very very wealthy, or what any of his ‘songs’ sound like.

I was in my 20s when I saw Apollo 13 with a friend who was the same age. After the movie she told me she was really hoping that the astronauts would survive.
