OP, all you can really do is take it as a lesson so next time you’re not worrying about it. Perhaps, even say with confidence, “I hope to hear back from you, but if you pick someone else, please don’t feel obliged to contact me. Ill understand.” Just a suggestion. I only say this because I am 100% certain that we’ll see the zillionth iteration of “April R Picks a Pointless Fight” again very soon. Back to the OP: It’s also pretty shitty when you interview with someone and they don’t say anything back? Really? Not even a form rejection letter? I totally get not responding to the entire pile of faceless people who have e-mailed their resume to you, but if you’ve actually had a conversation with someone, come on. I think that ranks right up their in terms of shittiness as claiming they’ll let you know either way when they won’t. Feel free to ignore people, but don’t outright lie. Some people’s kids. ---

I was unemployed for 6 months up until recently, and I never heard back from a single company about what was going on. I had multiple interviews where I was told ‘We’ve narrowed it down to 2 candidates, and you’re one of them’, and afterwards I never heard back from them again. They never responded to my thank you emails, or requests for updates. It’s just the way companies are now. They don’t have to give a shit about you, so they don’t. I had one guy tell me about how he was really impressed with me and I had the job in the bag, and then never heard from him again. Two months later he sent me a join request on LinkedIn. WTF? ---

I got to do hiring for a new position recently, largely because my manager couldn’t be bothered to. I promised to let people know either way, and yes, I actually made the calls to let people know they weren’t getting the job. And it SUCKED. My god, that was one of the hardest thing I’ve had to do. A couple people cried. One actually got mad because he assumed he was getting the job as soon as he saw the company name on the caller ID. But I agree with the OP. If you say you’re going to do it, then do it. It’s not right to leave people hanging. ---

Job hunting is just like dating. Everyone wants to know either way, everyone promises something at the end of the interview/date, no one actually wants to follow through with the rejection. Unlike dating, though, I’d think the person seeking the job, though they may have particularly high hopes for certain positions, it’s not like interviewing with multiple companies has the same sort of taboo as sleeping with multiple people at the same time. At the same point, I’d think if a person is worth bringing in for an interview, taking the 30s to add their email to a BCC list with a simple “Thanks, but we’ve selected someone else. We’ll keep your resume on file.” is within reason and doesn’t subject anyone to having to listen to people cry or yell or whatever. ---
