There was a point in time that I thought this was going to happen with me, and I even kind of hoped for it. My mom and my wife’s dad got to be friends, and even traveled together a couple of times without us. I wouldn’t have minded that hookup in the least. Of course, now that my wife and I are going through a rather unpleasant divorce, I suppose I’m really glad that didn’t happen. Christmas would have been…_awkward_. ---

They’re not related to each other. That makes them step. Say the wife’s mother and the husband’s father married. The wife is related to the mother but not the father, and the husband is related to the father but not the mother. Now, if MIL and FIL had a child, _that_ child would be the half-sibling to the husband and the wife. ---

This happened in my family. Margaret and Richard’s daughter, Carolyn, married Andy, whose mother, Fiona, was widowed. The only thing that made it oogy was that Richard and Fiona hooked up very soon after Margaret died. Absent that, there’s nothing wrong with it. ---

It’s like that Simpsons episode where Homer’s Dad and Marge’s mom start dating and plan to wed. Homer is very much against the idea: “Marge! They can’t get married! Then we’d be brother and sister! And our kids would be … freaks! With pink skin, no overbites, and five fingers on each hand!” Homer then looks at his kids, who slowly morph (in his mind) into said creatures (ie pretty realistic looking kids), causing Homer to flee from the room in terror. ---
