Your 6 greatest non-American and non-British bands

I’ve got to hand it to Sweden, that country knows how to make good music.

  • Roxette (Sweden)
  • ABBA (Sweden)
  • Robyn (Sweden)
  • Avicii (Sweden)
  • Kygo (Norway)
  • Savage Garden (Australia)
  • Nightwish ( Finland )
  • Wizo ( Germany )
  • Planlos ( Germany )
  • Nanowar of Steel ( Italy )
  • Rhapsody ( Italy )
  • Hoodoo Gurus ( Australia )

I’m gonna violate my own thread restrictions of posting 6 bands, but I have forgotten to post one of my favorite bands of all, Norway’s Motorpsycho, and I wouldn’t know which band to ditch from my original list.

There are many already listed that I could support, but I’m trying for some new names for the discussion:

  • The Chieftains (Ireland)
  • Bachman Turner Overdrive (Canada)
  • Gypsy Kings (France/Spain)
  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo (South Africa)
  • Clannad (Ireland)
  • Focus (The Netherlands)

Canada:
Bachman Turner Overdrive
The Guess Who
FM

Australia:
Radio Birdman

Germany:
Tangerine Dream

Ireland:
Taste (a sneaky way of picking Rory Gallagher)

Good one! Classic punk rock band from the German boondocks.

Oh wait, are we counting Canada? Because if we are, then I need to stick Bryan Adams in there.

Tragically Hip (Canada)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (he’s Australian, they’re from all over)
Einstürzende Neubauten (Germany)
KMFDM (Germany)
Laibach (Slovenia)
The Band (4/5 Canadian)

Scorpions (Germany)
INXS (Australia)
Bjork/Sugarcubes (Iceland)
ABBA (Sweden)
Rush (Canada)
Yello (Switzerland)

Certainly have to include what I’m listening to right now:
Rotting Christ [Greece]

Also:
Villagers of Ioannina City [Greece]
Nightwish [Finland; already mentioned but worth a second vote!]
Theatre of Tragedy [Norway]
Sabaton [Sweden]
Ghost [Sweden]

Happy with all of those I’m familiar with, but widening the pool a bit for consideration:

  • Bee Gees [Australia] for their contribution to disco

  • Bob Marley and the Wailers [Jamaica] - turned reggae from a regional to a global style

  • Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 [Brazil] - ditto Bossa nova

  • Ladysmith Black Mambazo [South Africa] - introduced the west to African music

  • The Scientists [Australia] - for a particular no-frills subset of grunge

When I first looked at this thread, I immediately though of The Guess Who and Rush.

Now I see they have been mentioned along with BTO and April Wine which I did not think of initially.

Realizing how sparse my knowledge of non-USUK music is…

Bob Marley & the Wailers
AC/DC
Einsturzende Neubauten
DOA
U2

And surprised I’m the first to mention:

Neil Young (technically a solo artist but whatever)

My first thought.

The Hu
Ali Farka Toure
Habib Koite

Air (France)
Rodrigo y Gabriela (Mexico)
Sepultura (Brazil)
Sue Foley (Canada)

Ninja’d!

1000Mods (Greece)
Truckfighters (Sweden)
Rush (Canada)
Tuber (Greece)
Stoned Jesus (Ukraine)
Madrugada (Norway)

I’m restricting my list to only one band per country:

Indochine (France)
Mecano (Spain)
Perfume (Japan)
Girls’ Generation (South Korea)
Belanova (Mexico)
Måneskin (Italy)

Dead Can Dance (Australia)
BLɅϽKPIИK (Korea)
Young Gods (Switzerland)
ABBA (Sweden)
Savuka/Juluka (South Africa)
a-ha (Norway)

Rush
The Band
Triumph
MSG
Bob Marley and the Wailers
AC/DC

And of course Nickleback

And you’re disqualified from this thread. :joy:
