My brother-in-laws and I have been talking about combining our talents to make a farm to table distillery. In joking about it over Christmas one of our tangents was that a distillery is perfect for the apocalypse since everyone is going to want to drink when the shit hits the fan. From there we decided the distillery needs to be self sufficient so we can keep making booze after the apocalypse happens. We started making a list of things we couldn’t live without; bacon, chocolate, tobacco, weed, coffee, whiskey, and beer, since that is what you really need to be self sufficient. Then we designed a facility that could do all of that and we decided to call it Apocalyptic Sin since we came up with 7 things people consider to be bad. So the question for you guys is what could/should we substitute in there to help you want to survive the Apocalypse? What would be your apocalyptic sin? ---

We’ve got pigs and corn so that seems like a doable switch. Of course there is no reason we couldn’t do both since we wouldn’t have to do anything different. ---

A way to make alcohol is always a winner in a disrupted economy. Distillation and brewing are important talents, like blacksmithing. A lady up the street, probably Mormon, has reserves of can goods, other things, everything one might need to get by. She asked me how I was preparing and I told her, I have bullets and I know where all of your stuff is. That is all I need. You can prepare all you want. Think it all the way through. And then you will just not be mean enough. ---

I have no interest in surviving an apocalypse. I was 35 when the Berlin Wall fell, and for all but maybe five or six of those years, I was living someplace (mostly DC area) that would have gotten one of the first nukes in a nuclear war. I was fine with that - if we were going to have a nuclear war, I wanted to be incinerated before I had any idea it was happening. ---

We actually thought about adding guns to the list but building a self sustaining machine shop as well as gun powder factory seemed like more work than it was worth. It almost replaced beer. Besides on this side of the apocalypse, it makes the regulation of our business much harder and probably decreases annual revenue. ---

That’ll be a bummer about the bacon but with enough booze, nicotine and weed i think i could make long pig work. Not sure I’d want to coffee to sober up in the morning, though. If we are going all the way to full time cannibalism, i would assume slavery is back in style so at least we’d have slaves to work our 200 acres. ---

And then you will just not be mean enough. I used to think this too, until I spent some time in farming communities. The farmers, Amish and Mormons are well armed and use their guns on an everyday basis as a tool, not just for weekend fantasy plinking. I’m not sure, you’ve thought the scenario through yet. 1. they have guns 2. they use them often 3. they are protecting their home turf 4. they know the landscape very well 5. their neighbors are just as skilled and knowledgeable good luck. ---

Can I bring books? I think the books solve the tp problem as long as you only want to read something once. I figure most people are going to be growing their own food so I don’t know if fresh fruits and veggies. I know in theory you can make aspirin from willow bark so it probably wouldn’t hurt to make sure some are growing by the river but that doesn’t seem like a good way to make money until the FDA is long dead and gone.
