My Gods name is Zilla and he kicks big ass
You might have your links mixed up.
Atheist here, like it. I’m tired of everyone kissing Christian ass in this country. I think they’re irrational, and I tell them so.
I’m agnostic. I would prefer to see a board that makes Christians think rather than one that would just make them angry. But I’m glad athiests put something up. I think American Christians need to be regularly reminded that their beliefs aren’t shared by everyone else in this country - even other Christians.
I just changed my e-mail tag line to read “The tilt of the earth is the reason for the season.” After all, no evidence points to Jesus being born in December anyway.
As of this post, 107 of the 125 responses to the poll are by non-Christians. I don’t think anyone can cry about the Christian majority on the SDMB.
A billboard that says “Christianity Sucks” is a religious billboard, just as a billboard that says “George Bush Sucks” is a political billboard. Atheism may not be a religion, but this billboard is anti-Christian, not pro-atheist.
I have no problem with pro-atheist billboards. I still don’t like anti-other-people’s-beliefs billboards. They’re just being rude and obnoxious. And, as pointed out several times in this thread, there are a lot of rude and obnoxious Christian billboards, too. “He did it, too” isn’t a valid reason to be obnoxious.
Question: How could you have a pro-atheist billboard that isn’t also an anti-other-people’s-beliefs billboard?
Isn’t a billboard that says “Jesus died for your sins!” an anti-atheist and anti-Jewish billboard? How is a billboard that says “Jesus isn’t real!” any more an anti-other-people’s-belief billboard than that?
I want to see you put up a billboard on Islam, Otherwise you are just another fraud and a coward.
Oops!
This billboard is what I meant. :smack:
Obnoxious.
But then I’ve never seen a billboard of any kind that I like.
Here are a few examples off the top of my head. Pretend these all have the “American Atheists” tagline at the end.
Anti-Christian:
[ul]
[li]You know it’s a myth[/li][li]Jesus kills[/li][li]Religion: Causing wars for at least 4,000 years[/li][/ul]
Pro-Atheist:
[ul]
[li]Have doubts? We can help you see reason[/li][li]Given the choice, we’ll take science[/li][li]Some of humanity’s greatest thinkers were atheists[/li][/ul]
See the difference? One set attacks Christianity, the other promotes atheism.
This is perfect. I couldnt have said it any better.
Anti-Christian:
[ul]
[li]You know it’s a myth[/li][/ul]
Pro-Atheist:
[ul]
[li]Have doubts? We can help you see reason[/li][/ul]
It seems like a distinction without a difference.
Of course, I’m not opposed to attack ads to begin with and I think the more we attack religion the better.
It’s like the difference between a “Go Niners” bumper sticker and a “Raiders Suck” bumper sticker. One’s positive, the other is negative.
Yeah, but the Raiders do suck. Just as the nativity story is, in fact, a myth.
Moderator note:
If this is directed at AClockworkMelon or any other poster on here, you should know that you aren’t allowed to insult them in this forum.
If you meant to attack the group that puts up the atheist billboards, there is no problem there, but next time try to be clearer. Also: please take some time to read a few current threads and get a feel for the culture of the place.
No warning issued.
Christian here. It’s not pleasant, but I have no problem with it.
Tacky. Looks like a xmas card.
Billboards should be witty or informative, this one’s neither. (I already knew it was a myth.)
Everytime I see religious billboards (Atheist or Christian, or really any sect), I get a little pain in my Liver and a shot of adrenal pricklin’ along my spine and bad bad thoughts. Besides that, it’s the worst possible Propaganda, a commercial devoid of subtlety, style, and substance… Baaahhdd copy.
Ugh. We made it almost to the bottom without anyone voice my view. I thought I was going to be special :(.
But, yeah. It’s rather stupid. It makes the believers feel better, but does nothing to anyone else. Just like the Christian ones.
And, honestly, if you are going to do something like this, can’t you come up with something that’s at least clever?
But this is so blah I went with “Don’t care either way.”
Also, can we please not do the thing where we argue with Der Trihs again? His mind is more made up than most of the Christians I know. It’s pointless.
I don’t think I could post anything more full of shit if I tried.
