Your beliefs and thoughts on the "atheist billboard"

Freaky! It’s like you’re in my mind!

Well, it is a sitcom.

Thanks to both of you!

I’m a Christian, and I voted “doesn’t bother me” although I think it’s a poor message. The atheist billboards linked above are much better.

First of all, I don’t have a problem referring to the nativity story as a “myth,” which says nothing about its historicity. Myths are meaningful stories and are not necessarily untrue. So in that respect, I’m not even offended by the sign (although I realize that most people equate “myth” with “fairy tale.” If they had called it a fairy tale I might be more offput).

And I also agree that attacking the beliefs of others is the wrong way to go. That’s why I like the pro-Athiest signs linked above better than this one; I just think they work better. Who wants to align themselves with dickish people?

I guess it doesn’t stir up enough emotional response in me to hate it, and they certainly have a right to spend their money and put it up there, so go for it. I don’t see getting excited about the holiday season if it’s just about a fairy tale, but if that’s how you want to celebrate it, go ahead.

I still think the UK group got it right with “there’s probably no god, so stop worrying and get on with your life”, or words to that effect.

But it’s so much fun, dammit!

Granted, picking on Der Trihs is no more challenging than beating up a five-year-old with a whiffle bat…but even that’s kinda fun.

I think the billboards on either side of Czarcasm’s links are bad news but admit the Christian examples seem worse. Though I can’t help but believe that some of the very worst examples of Christian billboards were chosen to be compared to a group of rather mild Atheist type boards. These examples do not represent a fair opposing contrast of the advertisements that are out there and on display.

I don’t think that this is the way to provoke thought or promote any new ideas for either side, messages displayed this way will not aid anyone in making choices on either religious or anti religious issues. This whole approach is wrong in my view, don’t think either side will gain any ground this way.

I don’t understand the motive to openly challenge anyone’s religious or anti-religious beliefs. It’s pointless and just plain obnoxious. People should be treated with respect, be allowed to live with chosen views in peace without be harangued about it.

As long as people are law abiding in their pursuit of religion or anti religion, leave 'em alone.

ETA, voted “atheist - don’t like it”

What
about
posters
like
these?

I’m Christian and I “don’t care” in that I’m not going to spend any energy worrying about it. I think it’s tacky and designed to provoke a reaction but life is full of tacky people trying to provoke a reaction. Life’s too short to worry about their billboards.

That’s because there is no fair contrast. What’s the worst an atheist billboard will say? “You’re a fucking moron because you believe in god!”?

And where might I find these posted in public where thousands may see them each day?

Having looked at the linked billboards, I’ll mention that I find most of the Christian ones to be tacky as well. Which, I suppose, is why I don’t hang out with people who say atheists hate America and stuff.

Really?
If you can find atheist billboards that can even come close to the Christian examples I’ve posted, I’d love to see them. That thing you “can’t help but believe” is false equivalency-because one side does something bad, that other side must be doing something equally as bad. Not true in this case, unless someone has cites that can show otherwise.

I said I didn’t like it because they are attacking Christmas. That’s a bad move. Attacking Christmas is like attacking cute little kids who dress up as angels at church. Everyone loves Christmas. You get together with the people you love and give and receive presents, and even if you don’t celebrate it, it’s a day off from work!

Shoulda picked something else that isn’t so beloved.

To Not All That Bright - Gary (formerly “the invis. wombat”) already gave some good examples of potentially more obnoxious atheist messages. And I know for certain there are much more mild Christian promoting billboards out there, see them all the time. “Jesus Come Into My Heart” is one that is on a freeway nearby. The comparative selections to which I am referring are skewed.

Also, missed the edit window, I voted “Not a Christian, have a problem with it” (since “atheist” is not offered in the selections)

Okay, so there are things atheist billboards could say which are equally offensive. You still have to show that they actually exist, though.

The reason I like being nonreligious is because it’s easier- much, much, much. If our people obligate me to start proselytizing, then fuck it.

Well you might have a valid point about what “athiest” billboards are out there, Czarcasm. (eta - also to Not Really All That Bright)
But it’s obvious some of the worst “christian” ones have been chosen in those comparisons.

This should cause one to wonder concerning the objective of who selected these for us to see and compare.
If whomever they are has gone overboard by citing bad examples on one side, they’re likely powder-puffing the other in attempt to make a point. That’s all I am saying.

Exactly. Can you come up with an atheist billboard that even comes close to the second row in this set?

Atheist. Don’t like it.

Mostly because it’s a billboard. I hate billboards. They’re frickin’ eye-sores.

Besides, the message is unneeded and obnoxious. If you don’t already know what the billboard is saying (they come right out and say it: “YOU KNOW”), then you’re not going to be convinced by this irritant.

It would be just as obnoxious as a billboard reading: “Go vegan, you fat fucks!”
