Here are two threads from 2015 on point. There’s doubtless been some progress in tankless systems since then.

Mar 2015:

> [@Tankless Hot Water Heaters--your experience?](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/tankless-hot-water-heaters-your-experience/714549):

> How much space do they use? (I’d like to reclaim some closet space). Are they prone to breaking? Useful for home clothes washing machines? Electric, or gas? Cost? Any general info, at all?

This thread also references even earlier threads.

Dec 2015:

> [@Tankless Hot Water issue](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/tankless-hot-water-issue/740057):

> I installed a 10 LPM whole house Natural gas (80,000 btu) water heater in my wife’s sisters home. I am not happy with the flow rate of this system as in to flow 140 degree water the unit has to be throttle the water throughput to under 2LPM flow. My next idea is to install another unit just like the first one and run them in series to get hot water sufficient to take a shower?? Or is there another way of improving the system???
