You could peel it off to reveal the first design underneath. On a related note, there’s a local legend that for years the main branch of the Spokane City Library had the original “butcher cover” of that album in their record collection for years before it was either replaced or some savvy record collector checked it out and “forgot” to return it. ---

That could be true. I recall in the 70s often finding decent rock albums listed at libraries, but they were always checked out and long overdue. I’d be surprised if it stayed available for years though. ---

Quite possible. Since most copies of the butcher cover were pasted over with the standard trunk cover, only someone who knew what to look for would realize what it was. (The biggest giveaway is a dark triangle formed by Ringo’s shirt that shows through a white portion of the paste-over cover.) ---

(“We’ll fuck you like Supermen,” according to Paul McCartney in a Rolling Stone interview where he recounted being asked about this by fans.)
