Dead or alive? Dead: Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich Alive: Neil Peart, Carmine Appice My Dad, who taught me drums, always played (and won) a drum duel with me on his birthday, which was on Dec. 26th. We’d set up across from each other and have at it, and he had his left hand independence so **down** , he could continue playing while drinking his Jack and Coke. Anyway he idolized Gene and Buddy, and so I did too.😃 Q ---

I’ve always thought that the mark of a great drummer is drumming you can listen to independently of the rest of the group. So, I’ll second **Lobot** ’s Bill Bruford, and add Mitch Mitchell. ---

Butch Miles was one of my favorite jazz drummers, largely because he didn’t take long, self-indulgent solos. Solos are for instruments that are capable of producing a melody. ---

Aronoff is always in demand for Fogerty concerts. I enjoy his drumming as well. He keeps it simple, but you know the man knows how to play time, and sometimes that is all that’s required. I’m not saying he isn’t a fantastic drummer , just that he knows what is needed and when. Q ---
