Do you remember Jarry Park ? Some old fans miss it.
how do you post a picture ?
Toronto Blizzard is right up there with my favorite sports team name of all time. I know theres been Buffalo Blizzards in I think indoor soccer or lacrosse, but Toronto was the first team with that nickname that I know of.
There was also a NASL team in Hawaii for like one season that is almost impossible to find any info on. I could go on and on about the old NASL.
Speaking of soccer, and thank you for the Phantoms shout out, as a Lehigh Valley PA denizen there was some mild interest during the World Cup this past summer in the old Bethlehem Steel ASL soccer team, which won multiple US titles between the end of WWI and the great depression.
How about:
NHL Philadelphia Quakers----lasted one season, worst regular season record in NHL history
CFL Baltimore Stallions—only American based franchise to win the Grey Cup
USFL Philadelphia Stars—played in all 3 USFL title games, winning titles both as Philadelphia and the Baltimore Stars
NASL Colorado Caribous----worst jersey in sports history, or any kind, anywhere:
NHL Brooklyn Americans----the last team to go toes up and survived by the “Original Six” of the NHL that lasted for 25ish years
As for the Expos I attended one of their games to see Mark McGuire the year after he hit 70 or was it 74 home runs, and the Olympic stadium was 1/3 full. The fans that were there were into the game though. Montreal was a great baseball town that got hosed by bad ownership and the league, frankly.
I have always loved the Spiders…and actually the fans choice of a name for the Cleveland team, the “Naps,” named after their manager/star Nap Lajori.
I also have long been in love with the “Clarksville Ginners.” Unfortunately, the name was not for the drink (or drinkers) but rather Eli Whitney’s invention, the cotton gin.
Sacramento Monarchs
Houston Comets
Charlotte Sting
Cleveland Rockers
… in that order.
Also, the North Charleston Lowgators.
The Minnesota Kicks, late of the NASL. If for nothing else, just for the hideous team colors and logo.
I had no idea who they were, but my grandmother from Minnesota sent me a t-shirt and shorts with their logo the one year I played soccer.
The Chicago Cardinals won an undisputed NFL title in 1947.
My first thought was the Woolwich Arsenal, moved from South London to North London in 1913.
Still regarded as intruders.
But…
Not so much a franchise, but after Hertha Berlin had been expelled from the Bundesliga (the top German soccer division), it was deemed politically important to have a Berlin team in the top tier.
Enter Tasmania Berlin…
They won their first match in front of a crowd of 81,000, but before the end of the season they had registered the lowest ever Bundesliga attendance of around 850 people.
They won two matches out of 34, drew four and lost 28, scoring just 15 goals and conceding 108.
When Tottenham haven’t done well I just think of them and things don’t seem so bad.
(It might even work for Leeds fans…)
Agree on both counts.
I went to one of the very first Ottawa Senators games when they returned to existence. A friend and I scalped tickets 4 rows from the ice (NOT a good place to watch a hockey game, BTW), and we were amazed how the rink/arena was smashed under the grandstands of the football stadium. It was the strangest rink I have ever seen a professional game in.
As to Olympic Stadium, my memories of it are not positive ones. It was an awful place to watch a game, and my biggest impression of the area around the Stadium was whoever won the concrete contract for the olympics in Montreal to build the stadium and surrounding grounds made a fortune! They also buried a huge section of the city of Montreal under tons of concrete. I haven’t been in Montreal in years, but I hope they tore down that stadium and all that cement. Awful.
Also took a trip to Park Jarry once, where the Expos played before Olympic Stadium. The stadium was still there, but it was a shell of its former glory. I think it was being used as a storage facility at the time.
My answer to the OP…
I miss the Baltimore Colts, Houston Oliers, Atlanta Flames, Hartford Whalers and Minnesota North Stars.
i know the Colts still exist, but not to me. It’s just not the same. When they moved to Indianapolis, it was terrible. I never looked at the Colts the same way again, and I wish the NFL would have forced the Irsay’s to leave the Colts history, records and logo in Baltimore (like the Cleveland Browns did).
The Oilers had those powder blue unis, and I loved Earl Campbell. Why the Titans won’t go back to those colors and that uniform design still mystifies me. The Titans have the most non-descript, boring brand in the NFL.
I also am a huge logo fan, and the Flames, Whalers and North Stars had great logos.
