Not really a ‘novelty’ song, but John Prine has a great song called, “Christmas in Prison”. “It was Christmas in Prison, And the food was real good, We had turkey and pistols, Carved out of wood.” It goes on and on from there. The first stanza makes it sound like a novelty song, but it’s really very beautiful. ---

I liked to play “Rusty Chevrolet” real load on my radio that was ok, when I drove a car with all the problems but the muffler. Don’t forget “Grandpa got run over by a beer truck”. Da Yoopers I really like “St. Stephen’s Day Murders” by “The Chieftains”. It’s about relatives that gome over and don’t know when to leave, so you take care of it. ---

my favorite novelty Xmas song is Tom Lehrer’s “A Christmas Carol” - “Christmas time is here, by golly, Disapproval would be folly, Deck the halls with hunks of holly, Fill the cup and don’t say when, Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens, Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens, Even though the prospect sickens, Brother, here we go again!” My favorite **gory** novelty Xmas song is Weird Al’s “The Night Santa Went Crazy”. My two favorite Xmas comedy routines are Stan Freberg’s “Green Chri$stma$” and Spike Milligan’s “Good King Eccleslas”. ---

I hate all Christmas songs, novelty or otherwise… Working in retail - especially record stores - around the holiday times will do that to ya! There are a couple I can tolerate, but they include a couple of X-mas tunes by punk bands (Bad Religion doing “Silent Night”) and The Kinks original “Father Christmas (Give Us Some Money)” which has a classic Ray Davies riff and attutude ciorca the band’s _Give The People What They Want_ punk period. * * * Yer pal, Satan ---
