Your favorite Westerns?

Color Movie Unforgiven with a nod to The Searchers
B&W Movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
B Western actor Lee Van Cleef
A Western Actor John Fuckin’ Wayne, Walter Brennan best supporting actor (yes, Fonda was a better overall actor than Wayne by far, but this is Westerns)
Classic TV series Maverick
Classic series star Tie: Jack Kelly and James Garner. Jack was a better actor, but I like Jimmy for all his other stuff.

Singing Cowboy? Johnny Guitar as played by Sterling Hayden, a laugh riot of stupid starring Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge
No guns hero? Kwai Chang Caine of David Carradine fame

And the prize for most obscure but most dead-on perfect entry in this thread goes to The Second Stone for forcing me to recall the experience of just a few months ago when I saw this “laugh riot of stupid” for the first time. Mercedes did better acting as the voice of the demon in The Exorcist and the only movie of the Western persuasion with a slower pace was an old one-reel John Wayne thing with a title along the lines of Along the Great Divide – hell, I may be forced to go to IMDB and get the real title so you folks can be on the lookout for it.

Color Movie - Just saw The Tall T and was blown away. Or maybe Shane.
B&W Movie - She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is an excellent choice, so I’ll echo that.
B Western actor - Tom Tyler–a little stiff, but kinda likeable nontheless.
A Western Actor - Randolph Scott
Classic TV series - Can’t say
Classic series star - James Garner, who wrote the book on easygoing charm.

Singing cowboy-- Roy Rogers, of course.

For comedy, I nominate Evil Roy Slade.

Nitpick: She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is color.

Color Movie - Outlaw Josie Wales or the Shootist
B&W Movie - ?
B Western actor - Jack Elam or Richard Boone
A Western Actor - John Wayne or Clint Eastwood
Classic TV series - Gunsmoke and Wild Wild West
Classic series star - James Garner, James Arness

Singing cowboy - Roy Rogers
Character whose main weapon was not a pistol - Chuck Connors -Rifle

And I’m sorry but I can’t stand anything with Audy Murphy. I immediately turn it off.

And old John Wayne movies can be excruciating sometimes. It’s almost embarrassing. It’s as if he didn’t come into his own until way late in his career.

Is Deadwood a western?

Color Movie – Support Your Local Sheriff!
B&W Movie – Fort Apache
B Western actor –
A Western Actor – John Wayne
Classic TV series – The Rifleman
Classic series star – Chuck Connors

Singing cowboy – Gene Autrey
Character whose main weapon was not a pistol – Lucas McCain, the rifleman.

Color: Shane There should be no debate about this. Oh, oh, wait a minute, you said “favorite,” not “best.” Never mind.

Don’t have time for each category, but pretty much all of Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. The spaghetti westerns were okay, but his later ones better: Pale Rider, Outlaw Josey Wales, Unforgiven.

About the only other Western I liked without Clint Eastwood in the starring role, was Tom Selleck in “Quigley down Under”. It was great!

Our tastes overlap!

There’s another category: Westerns set in other countries.

Since The Magnificent Seven is a ripoff of Seven Samurai, it should go in that bag, right?

Color Movie

Silverado - what can I say its probably my all time favorite movie

B&W Movie

Winchester '73 - talk about a fabulous chase movie

B Western actor

Ben Johnson - he played a great second fiddle to a lot of the big names

A Western Actor

John Wayne - I mean really is there another choice?

Classic TV series

Maverick - I like James Garner and the show is a good mix of humor and action

Classic series star

James Garner

Henchman, peering off into the distance serving as look-out: “Someone’s coming!”
Evil Roy Slade: “Shoot him!”
Henchman, still peering into the distance: “It’s a woman!”
Evil Roy Slade: “Wound her!”

I think that was the only funny part of that movie!
