There is a character in one of Gillian Roberts’s Amanda Pepper series who is reading one of MY books. But this is not a coincidence.
Once Marvel gets around to making an Alpha Flight movie, my first and last name namesake will become a lot more well-known. (I actually go by my middle name, though; I couldn’t find anyone with that name.)
I love that series! How fun.
Not a fictional character, but I was named after the actress Jennifer Jones.
My last name is very common amongst Ashkenazi Jews, but we’re Scots/Irish/Dutch.
Jennifer Jones?
The main character in Quadrophenia has the same name as me. It’s a couple of years younger than me, too, so I wasn’t named after him.
My last name in uncommon in the US and not very common in Ireland (from which it comes.) I was quite unreasonably delighted to have it show up with a minor character / witness in a Perry Mason novel
My first name used to be exceedingly rare; I was 35 before I met someone else with the name. He was a little kid who ran into my cubicle on Take your Rugrat to Work Day, wearing a nametag that said “Hi, My Name is [Your Name]”. Since then, I’ve met a few more and heard a lot more in fiction; it’s become a quirky name to name nerds with walk-on parts in TV and movies.
Last name is fairly commonly used; the only fictional one I know for sure is a character with my last name (and the first name of a woman I know) who was included into one of the Champions comics when Steve Perrin was writing them; we all gamed together.
Real world, there was a guy with my exact first/last name who got a town named after him in Texas, and a recent Secretary of State had my first name, although he pronounced it wrong. He’s probably to blame for it becoming more popular…
And, there’s an NPC in Glorantha named Ethilrist. Never heard the name or played the game before I picked this for my user name.
…wearing a name tag that said “My Name is [Your Name]”…
Oooooooo! The very next time I have to wear a name tag THAT is what I’m going to write on it!
And then I’ll walk around acting like the Robert Blake character in Lost Highway!
My last name is actually more common as a first name, but even then quite rare. I most recently found a cartoon character with it.
I do know of some fictional fools, criminals, and womanizers with my first name.
I have a very unusual last name that I have never seen used as the name of a fictional character. However I have a long-dead very distant relative with the same last name who was somewhat famous but isn’t exactly a household name these days. I have read his name in several nonfiction books, and he has even been mentioned, in passing, in a couple of fictional works.
My wife’s maiden name was Carlotta Valdez, which was the name of a Spanish noblewoman who figured prominently in the Hitchcock movie Vertigo.
At one point, her name appeared on a tombstone in that movie.
Ah… in the movie ***American Hustle, *** the fictional mayor of Camden, New Jersey (played by Jeremy Renner) was Carmine Polito. He was based on the real life mayor Angelo Errichetti.
Anyway, Carmine Polito was the owner of my favorite local pizza joint.
Well, my go-by name is shared by quite a few fictional characters - which is one reason I chose it, when I was at a time in my life that I needed to make a change. A good part of why I picked it was because so many fictional Maggies were awesome, sassy, tough-with-a-heart-of-gold women, and that was who I wanted to become. (I’m not tough, but I’m less of a pushover than I was before.)
Maggie “the cat” Pollard
Maggie Simpson - Baby with a Gun
Maggie the pilot from Northern Exposure
My birth-name is a name that is known but not common - there have been a few fictional characters, but not many. It’s better known as a work of art.
A Jeffrey Archer book from a few years back had a secondary character named Rebecca. After a chapter or two, it was revealed that her last name was Armitage. Rebecca Armitage was my grandmother’s name.
Ten or 20 chapters later, the character turned up again, only now she had a different last name. No explanation or reason; Archer was just being lazy.
In RL a bunch of kings and two serial killers have my first name.
You would think it would be more popular in fiction but I can’t think of anyone well known.
There was a well known horror series where the main character had my grandmothers maiden name.
There was another horror story where the character’s first and last name was the same as my cousin’s first and middle name. My cousin’s name is so unusual I actually asked my aunt about it, thinking it might be an obscure name that was once popular but she just shrugged and said she picked it because it sounded neat.
I actually knew a woman at my church by the name “Jessica Lovejoy,” which was the name of the evil daughter of the pastor on “The Simpsons.”
When I was a kid, my family went to the drive-in to see the movie The World’s Greatest Athlete. We were amused when one of the minor characters had our surname, which is not exactly rare but also not one most people hear or see with any regularity.
Four celebrities who happen to have the same name as comic book characters:
Ted Knight : “Too Close for Comfort” star and the original Starman
Robert Crane : “Hogan’s Heroes” star and the original Robotman
Robert Reed : “Brady Bunch” star and the lead character of the original “Dial H for Hero”
James Olson/Olsen : “Andromeda Strain” star and Superman’s Pal
Also, two comic book characters deliberately named after real people:
The Atom : named for Ray Palmer, editor of Amazing Stories
Blackhawk : named for Janos Prohaska, television actor and stuntman
Not sure if this was deliberate or not:
Jack Soo : “Barney Miller” star and Booster Gold’s tech support buddy
Janos Prohaska was especially famous for dressing up in animal costumes.
Seriously, when I was a kid, Janos used to appear regularly on “The Andy Williams Show” playing a cookie-loving bear.
Including hortas and mugatus.
