Your first furniture in the MMP

What was the first piece if furniture you bought for yourself? When and what were the circumstances? My answer will follow in a bit.

Carry on, and Happy Moanday!

OK,. so I’ll start.

1975 - my first apartment. It was a little furnished studio with a Murphy bed, a rather sad love seat, a tiny table with 2 chairs, and blue-and-green shag on the floor. So not a lot in the way of furnishings, tho theoretically sufficient for one person.

Not for me, tho. I went to one of those finish-it-yourself stores and bought a cheap pine rocking chair, then I got some brown stain to finish it. It wasn’t fine furniture but it was my first. I dragged that from place to place for years before finally either giving it to someone or donating it - I really don’t remember. Over the years, I’ve been able to afford better quality items, but that’s where it all started.

Morning!
Gosh, trying to recall. I lived with my parents, then a roommate.
With my husband, I’ll say it was a couch.
But after he passed, I bought myself a tv. It was so nice to be able to spend the money I earned on myself, instead of what he wanted!
Its a bit rainy today.
Off to an interview.

When my brother moved out I finally got my own room in my parents house.

I bought a futon and a teak veneered stereo cabinet. Hung my led Zep and Rocky posters. Kept the polka dot curtains my older sister hung when she had the room. It was all kinds of groovy. My stuff made it to Michigan then it was given away iirc.

The first one that stands out in my mind is a wingback chair. Old school ugly, but sturdy enough to hold me which was the key. When I was dating old what’s his name who was into antique televisions, we spent lots of time in thrift stores and such. I spent lots of time, thus, bored and looking for a place to sit that would be safe for someone of my size. This green wingback won the prize and as a reward for its duty, it got to come home with me. It lived a long life and even made it to our home that we live in now. Unfortunately after probably 40-50 years of life one of the legs decided to get a bit weak and I didn’t want to take a chance or the time to fix it.

FCM, you may regret getting me started on this subject! MusicMan says that we live in a house for wayward chairs. I love, love, love old chairs! I mean not any old old chair, but those that have a certain flair about them. We do, in fact, have many of them in our home. We have some old metal chairs that now live out on the patio that came from the bakery that was owned by a dear friend of mine in the 1980s. When we were staying in the hotel recently I took one of them there with me. I was sitting on it and all of a sudden, there was a snapping noise. I jumped up and looked, but there didn’t appear to be anything wrong. Still, I decided not to sit in it anymore. When I got back home with the chair in the back of the car, I noticed that on the bottom of the chair there were places for 4 bolts and only one remained! And, even though the chair was purple, I actually let it go for the sake of everyone’s safety. Ok, and maybe it didn’t bother me so much because I have three more of those chairs still here.

Have I written enough about chairs? Probably. Could I write 5 paragraphs more about them? Absolutely! But I will refrain. For now.

Today I’ve got my group program going on and a trip to the personal trainer. The painters are supposed to return but it’s also so supposed to rain so I’m not sure how that will all work out. See y’all later!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up, caffeinated, fed and even sheveled, so no YAWN. ‘Tis 78 Amurrkin out and sunny with a predicted high of 90, becomin’ cloudy with a chance of rain mid to late afternoon. We shall see. The plan of the day is high RDOS sloth. I have been a bzzy bear for the past three days, so I deserve to be slothful. Even sup will be somewhat slothful as it will involve leftover ribs, baked beans, and corn on the cob (I will cut mine off the cob) leftover from the Fourth of July feast.

I was given a wooden loveseat with beige cushions when I got my first apartment, so I guess
that counts. I also, like MOOOOOOM, purchased some unfinished furniture. Mine was two what I suppose really were nightstands, and an unfinished coffee table. I stained them with an oak finish and used the nightstands as end tables for the loveseat. The coffee table (duh!) was the coffee table. I then purchased two ginger jar lamps. I was quite the decorator! The ‘rents gave me my old bedroom suite which consisted of a double bed, two night stands, a dresser and a chest of drawers in a maple finish. Several years later when I purchased my own queen sized (well, of course, it was queen sized!) bedroom suite the old one went to a first cousin who was movin’ to his first apartment.

Coppertone appropriate/inappropriate appendages crossed for the job interview.

Sticky_Buns “home for wayward chairs” has given me a good Moanday mornin’ giggle!

I need no more caffeine or to feed rumbly tummy, so, onward into the day of sloth! Rah.

Happy Moanday Y’all!

I got married the first time in 1970 and my wife was a teacher so with my pittance of a military salary we had enough money to actually get furniture for our military housing. A lot of military guys I knew were sitting on apple crates and eating on TV trays, so we were the envy of many. It was all crappy Sears furniture and we bought it on time, but it seemed like luxury. We even had orange shag carpet!

72F upon arising at 0700 and it will hit 90 today. Very humid. Ugh. I just looked at the extended forecast and there is no relief in sight. In fact, a week from now we may hit 100. Double ugh. In Portland, we could have just packed up and headed out to the coast in the RV, but there’s no relief in this hellhole.

We procrastinated on our Covid booster for some reason and now three months have gone by. We need to set up an appointment this week to get that done. Covid at our age would not be fun.

I think breakfast burritos are today’s opener.

I believe the first furniture I bought was a pair of Balans chairs. (The computer says I can’t “embed images”, so go look it up.)
Remember those? If not, I’ll spare you most of the sales pitch about proper spinal alignment and yadda, yadda, yadda. I dunno, maybe I bought a dinette set first.

I finished the ice cream jigsaw puzzle, and I’m just getting started on the one based on the USA’s 250th birthday. The border on this one has some repeating motifs, which might make it trickier.

Morning all. Not much going on here, rain is expected about 1pm and the temperature is ‘only’ expected to reach 85F, so just another day in N. Ali-bama in July. I start my driving vacation on Thursday, so do hope it dries out enough that I can mow the lawn before I go. And the AC thermostat can’t seem to make up it’s mind, it works and then it stops. Will call the HVAC people and see if they can make it out here before Thursday (not likely).

I simply can’t remember what I got for my first furniture purchase, I do remember it got me into obtaining my first real credit card so that I had something to back up my payments with, but 1982 is a little far in the past for me.

swampy, enjoy your slothage, you’ve earned it.

And onward into the week. Need to get sustenance and gas up car here in a couple of hours.

I think the first piece of furniture I bought for myself was a futon.

Walked. Bacon is cooking for my breakfast burrito. I’ll have Herdez guacamole salsa, and a couple of drops of ghost pepper sauce on it.

Moanday. Back to irk day. :frowning:

Mornin’ everyone.

It’s 55F and sunny out. It’ll remain sunny all day, with a daytime high of 86F.

The first piece of furniture that I purchased for myself was a round dining table at the Star-Lite Swap Meet. My then-boyfriend/now-husband and I were moving into our first apartment. I already had dishes, the coffee table my Dad made in high school, a twin bed and frame and mattress, and a recliner. My husband brought his sofa bed, so we had a sofa in the living room. A friend of my mom’s gave us wheeled chairs for the dining room table. I think six months to a year later, we purchased a cheap bed frame and a full-sized mattress. Again, it was all we could afford.

In last week’s MMP, you were all discussing foreign language classes. I took a year and a half of German in high school. My mother is from Germany, and I would hear her speaking it every day. I actually spoke German quite fluently until I moved to the US. We moved to Fort Lewis, and some nasty neighbor heard me speaking German with my mother. She called us Nazis and was very nasty. I refused to speak German for many years. Anyhoo, while I could understand most of what was being said in German as I grew up, I could no longer speak it. I opted to take German in high school, and I loved my first teacher. However, in the second year, the original teacher came back from his sabbatical, and he sucked. He was more interested in setting up his hosting business, so we spent most of our time playing German Monopoly. I dropped the class because of this. I took some sort of class through Fort Lewis when I went to work on the installation, and I have the cassettes and workbook upstairs in my closet. However, if you don’t use it, you lose it, and I still don’t speak German. I can understand a lot of what is being said, though.

The 4th of July down at my son’s place was nice. We didn’t totally escape the booms, though. Fireworks started down there in the evening, and while there were some booms, it was nowhere near as bad as it is around my house. All the same, Maisie was quite scared, and even Zeus was a little scared. He kept pacing and looking out the window, then would place himself near Maisie as if he were guarding her. Such a sweetie, even though he was clearly scared. None of the dogs was interested in going potty because of the fireworks until Buster finally couldn’t hold it any longer and dashed to a corner of the yard to empty his bladder. He scooted back very quickly.

All the same, we had a good time down there, stayed the night, and got home around noon yesterday. When we returned to our neighborhood, we could see people working to clean up a huge pile of fireworks debris on the street in the development across the road from ours. Our street was mostly cleaned up, but I could see some debris in our driveway and on the front lawn.

We unloaded the pups, and I came out front to clean up the litter and water my plants. I then went out back and watered all the plants. Then we all relaxed for a bit, and except for some brief pops, I was relieved that I wasn’t hearing fireworks.

That relief was short-lived. The crappy neighbors next door had a houseful of people over to watch Mexico in the World Cup. There were lots of whistles and vuvula playing, screaming, cheering, and screaming kids. It was pretty damn noisy. That was bad enough, but then they decided that shooting off fireworks was the thing to do, so we got another night of fireworks and a very scared Maisie. Ugh.

I sure hope today is much quieter. Today will consist of some yardwork and not much else. I do need to go to Costco because, somehow (gasp), I am on my last pack of Costco toilet paper. I don’t usually let us get this low.

I hope all of you have a good day and that everything goes smoothly. Take care of yourselves.

I’m on my last two rolls. Need to pull the trigger on another Amazon order soon.

Afternoon, mumpers! It’s currently 27c/80f with no predicted change, and cloudy. Weather app says “This is the perfect fucking day to make slutty brownies, but you’ll have to ask Jessica for the fucking recipe.”

I had several cups of tea during afternoon, and thumbed my nose in your general direction

When I first left home, I moved into a furnished room in a shared house. The only thing I bought for myself there was a small unit with two shelves, just big enough to house my stereo and speakers. I painted it myself, in a really nice shade of blue and stencilled crescent moon and star designs in silver on it. I’ve still got it, it’s been home to the same stereo for almost 40 years until I finally sent the stereo to the recycler because so many bits of it had stopped working. Still haven’t replaced it, but the little table is still here.

We are back home after our weekend adventures. Two of our friends went home on Sunday because they live locally and one of them had arranged to cook for his parents that night. The remaining four of us stayed to the end of the festival then walked a couple of streets away for a kebab before going back to the hotel. One friend was determined to watch the England/Mexico game so he went straight off to bed with his alarm set for 1am, his wife came and sat in our room for a while drinking tea and nattering. We have made plans to meet up for a few other things in the coming months which will be fun.

We were up reasonably early and had breakfast in the hotel before saying our goodbyes and going our separate ways. The drive back was relatively uneventful, there was a long queue of very slow-moving traffic on the M6 so we dropped off a couple of junctions early and came back on a different route. The cats don’t seem to have missed us, we’d been in for a while before either of the girls came to see what was going on, and Muffin had retired to her safe space in the bookcase.

I’ve unpacked and distributed stuff back where it goes, got laundry to do later and I am off to the gym this evening for a spin class. It’s getting hot again, which does not make me happy, so we’ll be looking at ways to keep ourselves and the fuzzbutts cool again.

My friend‘s boyfriend was a cabinet maker and when I was 20, he made me a lovely coffee table that became my stereo stand. I wonder what happened to that lovely coffee table that became my stereo stand.

The heat and humidity have finally dissipated for a few days. Supposedly it will return later this week, but I put no faith in weather forecasts more than 48 hours out. Seeing my chiropractor today, then going to visit Ariel and check on her leg.

Afternoon. I’m taking a break from staring at the screen to… stare at another, slightly smaller screen in a different room. Hm.

It’s overcast and feeling a bit chilly today; yesterday’s rain never really arrived, and today’s forecasted sun isn’t showing up either.

I spent a few years backpacking then a bit in a badly furnished room in a terrible house share before moving into an unfurnished place (with one other person and no money). It wasn’t until I was in my 30s I had my own little flat that was just mine, rather than being a mismash of leftover bits and other people’s stuff.

I had plenty of cheap furniture over the years; the world’s worst sofa bed being one memorable one (quote the guy I bought it from ‘It’s not very good as a sofa, it’s not good as a bed either, but it’s small enough to fit in your car, light enough to get up stairs and it’s only £10, so…’)

The memorable bit from getting my own place wasn’t the furniture, it was the really nice lady who gave me a huge pile of cooking gear free, as she was moving in with her partner and she wanted to pay forward the help she’d had getting her own place. I’m still using the pans, almost 20 years later.

Oopsie, yes, O levels became GCSEs probably not long after you left. A few years back then changed from a letter system to a number system, so now I can’t remember what’s a good grade.

Anyway, I should get back to the other screen.

My first apartment was furnished, so I didn’t have to buy anything. I moved from there to a house with a boyfriend. A cousin owned a used furniture store, so I bought a green wing back chair / sofa set and two end tables. They were retired after a few years.

Up, caffeinating, breakfasted and fixing to do KP. Not a whole lot on the agenda except for making a Senegalese chicken peanut stew over cous cous for supper.

Stay safe and healthy y’all!

my first furniture purchase was a bookcase. my parents bought the rocking chairs. i have bought various gliders and rockers since.

last night i got the microwave rack built, and placed over the microwave. things are a bit better in that area now.

it is a gloomy rainy day in phila. 73f with thunderstorms. luckily it was in a misty phase between storms when i arrived at the office.

as we are winding up the holiday weekend in the states, here is the new citizen test. i passed. although the stupid test did not give me credit on the electorial college question.

Civics Practice — Welcome.US

So that would be, what, 50 rolls???

OMG - that really is a thing! And now I want some, dammit.

I spent the better part of 2 hours pulling weeds, filling a big plastic bag (one that used to hold pellets - they’re nice, heavy bags.) I’m now clean, dressed reasonably presentably, and fed. I took some pics of a few ratty looking junipers to send to the landscape company. I have a 1-year warranty and I believe these should be replaced as they’re more yellow and brown than green. We shall see what comes of my email.

The forecast for the next few days mentions rain and storms, but with luck I can get out in the mornings and do more weeding. At the rate I’m going, I figure I’ll need 2 more weeks to finish. I just don’t have the endurance I had at 40, or 50, or even 60. If it didn’t get so hot, I could do more in the afternoon, but no way I’m going to be out in the sun in the upper 80s. That’s just asking for trouble.

So, maybe I’ll do some sewing for the boat - I have one project I can do now, but the other needs to wait till I get a valence delivered, theoretically on Firday. For now, tho, a little chillage is in order.

I’m trying to remember. My friend and I moved into my first apartment, and he had new-to-me furniture. My first actual purchases were probably bookcases from Target and a futon. That was a great apartment (she thinks wistfully).

We again have yellowjackets tunneling into a shrub at our front door, so they’ll all be evacuated by means of death tomorrow. I’m sorry to do it in that our pollinators are low this year, but these guys have to go.

It’s another hot one here today. I’m glad I have today off work - we had an unexpected thunderstorm come through on the 4th at 9pm that meant all of the planned fireworks were cancelled. So they (and my neighbors) did them last night instead. However I cannot complain - unlike my previous neighborhood, these fireworks were reasonable and nothing egregious. In my old neighborhood, they would set off big ones that would rattle the windows and it would go on for two weeks. I don’t know how they afforded it!

So today I’m putting all the machines to work! I’m quite happy with the performance of my robot vacuum and will be keeping it. It’s currently hard at work vacuuming the house and then I’ll see how it does at mopping. The mopping feature is a bonus as I was more concerned about the vacuum performance. I did a small test run and it seems to completely avoid the rugs, so fingers crossed. And laundry will be sloshing all day as I catch up on some of the bigger things that need to be done.

Good luck at the interview Coppertone.

lilly agreed on the yellow jackets. That’s too close to the house and those suckers are mean SOBs.
