My oldest son - “MOO!” in response to his favorite picture in his animal storybook. Daughter - “Dada” of course, she’s Daddy’s princess. Shortly thereafter, “cookie!” Youngest son - Not very chatty yet at 16 months old. Will say “Dada” occasionally though. ---

I don’t remember mine, but I was around for my little sister’s first pregnancy, and lived with them for about 3 years after. She had a rough pregnancy, was off her feet for a few months after, so I was with my niece as much as my sister was for a while. It’s been 15 years now, but I think my sis _might_ have forgiven me by now for ensuring that my niece’s first words were in cat. She meowed for weeks before realizing that hey, she could make human sounds, too! ---

My first word was “no,” because I was always in trouble for something. To this day, I’m much more of a let’s-do-it-and-figure-out-why-it’s-stupid-after-we-have-all-the-data-because-maybe-it’s-not-really-stupid kind of person than I should be. My younger sister’s first word was “RadicalPi,” or my real name anyway, curiously enough for the exact same reason. (My mother apparently said, “RadicalPi, no!” at least once every ten minutes for five years.) ---

My son’s first intelligible word (that is, we could tell he was making a word as opposed to random sounds) was “tickle”. I used to play a game with him where I would tickle him under his chin, then behind his ear, then his tummy, foot, etc. while saying “tickle, tickle, tickle” (I know, unoriginal), and he said it back to me (although his version was “tick-a tick-a tick-a”. ---

Don’t know about my own, but my daughter’s official first word was _Godzilla_. One day during her pre-talk babble stage, I showed her our little green plastic monster, instructed her to say Godzilla, and was rewarded with a fine _gahzi_. Unfortunately she wouldn’t repeat it for company, and ultimately decided to specialize in boring words such as _dada._ ---
