“Il faut cultiver notre jardin” from _Candide_. I was known for being the top French student in my class, and also for working in the school garden. This was 1981, so yearbook quotes go back a long way. I’m surprised so many people didn’t have them (maybe it’s just the Aussies). ---

No quotes for my high school (which has 400 seniors in the graduating class, so no surprise, there wasn’t room for any). You could get a quote if you won a senior superlative (best-dressed, most intelligent, best-looking…), but there were maybe 10 kids that got those. ---

We had quotes (or favorite sayings), and if you didn’t provide one, it was provided for you. I chose “Surely you jest”, which I used to say a lot when I was 17. ---

No quotes in our yearbook. We had a picture. Off to the side, where our name was, it also listed what clubs we’d been in, theater, sports, and the like. ---

Both from Springsteen songs: What I put: “Someday we’ll look back on this and it will all seem funny.” I think back and it’s still not funny, but someday… What I wish I had had the balls to put: “For the ones who had a notion/yeah the notion deep inside That it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive I wanna find one face that ain’t looking through me I wanna found one place I wanna spit in the face of these Badlands.” Yeah, I hated high school with the fire of a thousand suns. ---

No quotes in my high school yearbook, and the list of our accomplishments was cut off along the bottom edge of our photos. On the good side, at first glance it looked like \*\*everyone \*\*did a lot more than we actually did. ---

Only the graduating class (Grade 11…yes, I know it’s different from the rest of the world, long story) had quotes in the yearbooks. I forget what all of my text said, but my blurb began with a quote from the composer Schubert: “The heart is the ruler, but it should be the head.” ---

We didn’t have quotes- just our names and nicknames, plus whatever extracurricular activities we were involved in. Ours was an intellectual school filled with guys who had very sick and/or sophomoric senses of humor. I’m sure the administration figured that we’d use our “quotes” to make some kind of hidden obscene jokes. And I’m sure we would have. I mean, the school newspaper did profiles of all the graduating seniors each year, and guys were constantly trying to sneak in jokes- like saying they planned to attend the Cleveland Institute of Technology (“huh huh… CLIT!”) or that their favorite activity was Consciousness Raising in Central Park (which merely meant getting together to smoke weed). ---
