I dislike “Come Together”. At the end of the refrain, “over me” seems forced, like they couldn’t find a way to make it fit the melody or something. It comes off sounding both hokey and pompous, and ruins an otherwise only mildly annoying song.

> My least favorite has to be “Glass Onion” off the White Album. What a self-indulgent piece of tripe. When you’re writing songs about your own songs it might be time to consider if that double album is really worth the trouble

If you pay attention, you’ll notice that it’s John’s song, yet it’s all about Paul. Why? I don’t know, but my gut reaction is that John was being rather sarcastic. At the time, they weren’t getting along that well, tensions were high because of the Magical Mystery Tour fiasco, tensions were mounting due to Yoko, and he probably had some residual anger over India (nothing to do with Paul, but still…). So, I always took that to be a rather biting commentary over how serious Paul took himself.
Of course, that’s just my unsubstantiated interp.

> What was that one song from Yellow Submarine (the film), which is all silly and self-referential? The lyrics are something like, “This song is not out of key/Because we wrote it that way.”

George wrote this song long, long before Yellow Submarine came out. It’s on disc 1 Anthology 2. When he wrote it, he was fairly pissed off over the fact that his songs weren’t getting recognition…they were only northern songs. (The name of the company that controlled the rights to the Beatles tune…) That’s why he went on to create Dark Horse records, and that’s also why the George has control of his own Beatles songs, instead of Jackson or Sony.
Anyway, in the original all the "we"s were _I_s. I never could understand why anyone thought a rather bitter song would make a fine addition to Yellow Submarine…but oh well.

I always took “Yer Blues” as a parody and not as a serious attempt at blues…and “It’s Only a Northern Song” “You Know My Name…” and other such ‘throwaways’ were sort of their way of saying they could sing a cereal box’s ingredients to the tune of “patticake” played on tricycle horns and still get people like Dave Marsh and Kurt Loder to describe it as seminal.

Anyway, out of their more serious song writing attempts…

**Old Brown Shoe** …could have been a great song, has a killer guitar solo…but the vocals are mixed in like shit.

**Revolution #1** Yes I know this is the ‘intended’ version of the song. But the ‘fast’ version is so much better, making this just redundant. And it gave a million lesser bands the inspiration to rerecord crappy ‘soft’ or "unplugged’ versions of their own work to squeeze a little more out of a hit tune.

You’re all concentrating on the latter albums too much. What about some of the awful covers on the first few, from “Chains” to “Honey Don’t” to “Baby It’s You?”

But of their own pieces from that era, the one that makes my skin crawl the most is “Run for your life.” You know, the one that starts so cute and bubbly:

> [@](#):

> Well, I’d rather see you dead, little girl, than to be with another man

and keeps it up every line until the catchy “na na na” close.

Gotta wonder about John at times.

According to Ray Coleman’s biography _Lennon_, the original title was “Baby, You’re a Rich Fag Jew.”

I’m not as big a Beatles fan as I used to be, but I actually like almost all the songs listed above. “Revolution 9” and “Octopus’s Garden” are my least favorite, but I don’t hate them as much as I used to.

When I play “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” for people (like I said in another thread, I’m working up to being able to do the entirety of _Abbey Road_ solo-acoustic style) I introduce it as “Hands down, my favorite song ever written about a homicidal medical student.”

I really like “I Want You/She’s So Heavy”, but I think it goes on a little too long after it makes its point. To me, the only truly skippable track on AR is “Octopus’s Garden”.

As for my least favorite, it has to be “Within You Without You”. I appreciate George’s attempts to bring Indian music to a US audience–I just don’t want to listen to them. 🙂

For those that don’t like “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)”:
You will have a greater appreciation for the original once you hear the Bee Gee’s cover of it in the _Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band_ movie.

BTW, I really like that movie for its camp value…but I also like Peter Frampton’s version of “She Came In Through The Bathroom Window”.

If George and John came back from the dead as zombies, would you still shoot them in the head? Or would they get special treatment because of who they are (were)?

And everything on the White Album, followed by Within You, Without You.

From the White Album - “Why Don’t We Do it in the Road”. Sure didn’t sound like one of their songs. I found the following Wiki entry.

> **[The Beatles (album)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beatles_%28album%29)**
>
> The Beatles, also referred to colloquially as the White Album, is the ninth studio album and only double album by the English rock band the Beatles, released on 22 November 1968. Featuring a plain white sleeve, the cover contains no graphics or text other than the band's name embossed.\[a\] This was intended as a direct contrast to the vivid cover artwork of the band's previous LP Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beatles is recognised for its fragmentary style and diverse range of gen...

“Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?” was written by McCartney in India after he saw two monkeys copulating in the street and wondered why humans were too civilised to do the same.[98] He played all the instruments except drums, which were contributed by Starr. The simple lyric was very much in Lennon’s style, and Lennon was annoyed about not being asked to play on it. McCartney suggested it was “tit for tat” as he had not contributed to “Revolution 9”.[99]

My mother, sister and I lived in a single hotel room together for about a year. Laura and Mom needed something playing at night so they could sleep. I set up the XBox 360 and, occasionally, played all the Beatles songs I had.

My sister hates “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” so much it actually _woke her up._
