I’ll name the least favorite relative I saw over Hanukkah. My cousin Alex. I think I’ve mentioned him before. He works for the Illinois state’s attorney’s office, always gets drunk over the holidays, brags about his lawyering prowess, and complains about the idiocy of juries. He’s a jerk, but he’s our jerk, and we love him. Still, it’s a waiting game to see when he’ll fall asleep in his chair, and we can talk about something else. One year we had a pool. There was much relief last October when he was too busy to come to my mother’s memorial service. Oops. LF time you attended church on Christmas [eve]. ---

I’d get a lecture on how she got new clothes for her birthday, and was always glad to get them. That may have been true, but I was a kid (and teen) who couldn’t have cared less about clothes. Plus, my mother bought me clothes year-round. She enjoyed shopping for clothes, and every couple of months, I’d come home from school, to find a pile of new stuff she’d bought, that I had to try on immediately (couldn’t even have a snack of a glass of water first), so she could take back the next day anything that didn’t fit. I hated those days. Somehow getting clothes as a present was supposed to effect some psychological trick of making me like them because they’d come as a gift. I just resented them, because they were one fewer fun present I could have gotten. My mother always bought tons of clothes for my son (unsolicited-- like I said, she loves to shop for clothes), but she’d send them at the beginning of each school semester, and the summer: she didn’t give them for his birthday, Hanukkah, or Purim. LF holiday thing your family makes you do. ---
