That may be the bit I’m remembering, because I remember the LMNO part. For some reason tho in my memory it’s Tim Kazurinsky doing his Dr. Badofsky character, complete with the many signs he always used (like Aykroyd did in the sketch you linked).
ETA: Thanks for the link, SP. I’m pretty well convinced that’s the sketch I remembered, but somehow I conflated the two characters, most likely because of the signs.
Not long after the premier of “48 hours,” Starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, Nolte was scheduled to be the guest host, but according to Murphy, he was sick, and could not appear on the show that night, which was of course, live. A cut out of Murphy’s face was placed over Nolte’s picture, and the show went along as planned without Nolte.
At the end of the show, when to whole cast piled on the stage, all of a sudden, Steve Martin, unannounced, came running on the stage, out of breathe. When Martin made it the stage, he told Murphy. "If you didn’t have a guest host you could have called me! I need the money! I have children to pay for! Most I don’t even know about!
I know it was possible the scene might have been planned, but the expression on Murphy’s face told my brother and I, it was all improv, on Martin’s part.
Early years, with John Belushi and the gang. They’re all superheroes at a party, and John is the Incredible Hulk. He comes out of the bathroom, and the party goers recoil in horror. “C’mon, you can’t expect it to smell like roses!” is John’s reply.
And then he opened the show with, “Live, from New York, it’s The Eddie Murphy Show!” (The next host, Lily Tomlin, would discuss this, and the resulting controversy, in her opening…and then finish with, “Live, from New York, it’s The Lily Tomlin Show!”.)
Anyway, my top three, in terms of what I consider “memorable”:
#3 - Sam Kinison’s stand up routine…or, more accurately, the “static card” of the cast that appeared on the screen over his final joke. (In repeats, the joke is simply edited out.)
#2 - Joe Piscopo “drops trou” (when Betty Thomas hosted, there was a sketch with Piscopo as one of the Three Stooges in a karate class, and when he bumps someone in the chest, his pants fall down; based on everybody’s reaction, it was not scripted).
#1 - Sinead O’Connor tearing up Pope John Paul II’s picture, saying, “Fight the real killer!” (in repeats, they use a dress rehearsal recording, where she holds up (and doesn’t rip) a photo of a child) - and the next week, host Joe Pesci holding up the photo, taped back together.

[li]“King Tut” - Steve Martin makes a speech about the crass exploitation of the Tutankhamen exhibit, then launches into this bopping song: “Born in Arizona/moved to Babylonia/King Tut!” [/li][li]“Jaws 2” - Dan Aykroyd as Sheriff Brody breaks the news to the boyfriend of one of the victims: “Walter I have some good news and some bad news. Good news, you’re invited to a party at my place tonight. Bad news, you’ll be coming stag!”[/li][li]The Samurai sketch where Belushi accidently cuts Buck Henry across the forehead. Then, the Weekend Update only a few minutes later: “Top Story: a drug-crazed John Belushi…” with footage in slo-mo![/li][li]The “Coffee Talk” sketch with Rosanne and Madonna, with suprise walk-on by Barbara Streisand. You can tell they’re all floored.[/li][li]“Big Bitch Bull-dyke Bust-out of 1989”: Jim Bakker, Leona Helmsly and Zsa Zsa Gabor escape from prison and go on a robbery/killing spree. Jan Hooks as Tammy Baker. Nuff Said.[/li][li]A sketch with a “VD caseworker” - Bill Murray keeps going into a men’s room, you hear him scream, he comes out and goes “Why does my penis burn when I urinate?”[/li][li]The Julia Child sketch - “I’ve cut the dickens out of my finger!”[/li][li]Mr and Mrs Conehead meet Connie’s new boyfriend…Frank Zappa![/li][li]The Bad News Bees: “He’s buzzing off! Look, there’s honey on his sheet!”[/li][li]“Fred Garvin - Male Prostitute!”[/li][li]“I’m Gumby, dammit!”[/li][li]Natalie Cole sings with The Dead: Chris Farley as Cass Elliot, John Goodman as Elvis, etc. The funniest part was “Tammy Wynette” (who at that time was very much alive) going “I am NOT DEAD! This is how rumors get started!”[/li][li]The Island of Masterbating Zombies - host Robert Wagner as the leader of the vigilantes: “Men, we have a bunch of zombies running around this island…and they’re punching the munchkin!”[/li][/ol]
Many, many more.
Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken in the "“More Cowbell!” skit about the song “Don’t fear the reaper,” with Jimmy Fallon unable to keep a straight face in the background.
