I responded to another thread about burger places and suddenly realized how many food places I have in my “neighborhood.” I’m going to define it as an area I could walk to if needed (I’m a 50 year old out of shape guy, so under a mile or two without any major roadways without sidewalks)… places I could hop in my car and be ordering in under 5 minutes. I could easily double the list if I moved the boundary to 10 minutes. Surprisingly I live in suburbia in a tree filled lot that is in a fully residential area… we just happen to be very close to a few commercial areas. Here is my list… anyone have more? I can’t even come close to the OP, but the exercise sounds fun. McDonald’s Hardee’s Arby’s Subway Popeye’s Pizza Hut Taco Bell a Chinese place a wings place a Mexican place (last time it was open) Little Caesar’s a seafood place and probably at least three others I have never been in, and at least two that closed in the past few months that I did frequent. ---

Well, I’m not going to list them, the list is too long. Using GrubHub, pickup only within one mile, brings me 42 restaurants. That’s just pickup only and just who’s signed up with GrubHub. So, not counting fast food places. Delivery available is more like 200 restaurants, and I don’t have to leave the house at all… ---

Lets see, we live in a bedroom community. There is a walking path through the park through the park on which we could get to the commercial area by foot. It would be a three-mile walk through the woods though, so we always drive. We have: Arbys Dairy Queen McDonalds Subway Dominos And also, in local flavor: An old folks’ home cookin’ place Two mexican restaurants A chinese restaurant A gastropub An independent pizza joint ---

There are dozens of restaurants just outside the five-minute-by-car cutoff from my place. The ones in range are: Chain: McDonald’s Dairy Queen Combined Taco Bell/Long John Silver’s Popeye’s Chicken. Indie: Vietnamese Pho joint (5 min walk) 3 Pizza joints (1 in 5 min walk range) Chinese joint Mexican seafood joint Donut shop Tex-Mex joint. ---

We have all the usual suspects. There seem to be an awful lot of suburban moms ladies lunch cafes, you know - salads, or half a sandwich and a cup of soup for about $8. I like to hang out in Wegmans cafe, there’s no end to the offerings. And there are quite a few “Mexican” places ranging from plain cheese quesadillas to overstuffed burritos. All these, I have to drive to. I could walk up to the On The Go gas station for a sub sandwich or hot dog, though. ---

Within 2 minutes walk: 7/11, Subway, Der W, a Thai place and a lousy Chinese fast food joint that I would never eat at. Within 10 minutes walk: Dunkin’ Donuts, Togos, McDonalds, Starbucks, Burger King, Safeway. Within 10 minute drive: just about anything. ---

Thankfully there are only three fast-food joints in this neighborhood, and two of those I would have to drive to: Subway, Papa John’s, and DQ. I don’t frequent any of them, because there is much better food to be had: Jade: five star Vietnamese for about $10 Mekong: ditto An excellent Thai place Two four star Italian restaurants A four star Greek place Three five star sushi joints A barbecue shack A perogie food cart Three local pizza places, all good A southwestern restaurant A so-so Mexican place A frozen yogurt bar Several pubs A great bakery that serves deli lunch and breakfast stuff There are others, but you get the drift. ---

10 mile radius: None 20 mile radius: Arby’s, McDonald’s (2), Subway, Taco Bell, Culver’s, Pizza Hut. No longer Hardee’s, KFC or even Applebee’s, all closed. 30 mile radius: same as 20 40 mile radius: same as 20 50 mile radius: same as 20 In all fairness, most of that 50 mile circle is water. Haven’t seen any floating fast food joints yet. It would be nice – maybe they could pull up to shore and bring the burgers to me. ETA: I have limited my list to fast food and chains. We certainly have many sit-down, locally owned, one-of-a-kind restaurants and bars. God, do we have bars, and many of them have good food. ---

There are lots of restaurants within a 5 minute drive of my house, including at least a dozen Korean restaurants (Persian restaurants, Chinese restaurants, sub shops and pizza shops rounding out the top 5). ---

I live in NJ. So basically Italian, Italian, Italian, Italian, Italian plus good Chinese and your standard Wendy’s and McD’s. I’m not complaining. Nothing like a good pasta e fagiole soup, a perfectly prepared pizza with real mozzerella or some amazing dim sum on a Sunday afternoon. A little further afield we have a nice selection of Indian buffets. ---

In a town in southeastern MA with about 50 food places altogether, I have ten within 1 mile walking distance, including a supermarket with an eat-in deli/coffee shop area: Franchise: Dunkin Donuts McDonald’s (actually across the bridge in the city across the river) Supermarket w/eat-in deli: Market Basket (also across the river) Independent: Galaxy Pizza House Seafood Hut (almost year round, but closed about 2 months in winter, outdoor seating only) Yummy’s Ice Cream (seasonal, takeout window only) Dog Palace (hotdogs, seasonal, outdoor seating only) Just Ray’s Restaurant Vila Verde (Portuguese) Vivvy’s Hotdogs Ice Cream & More There are also three bars within that distance that served limited fare.
