Good? And yes based upon a short story- but heavily padded.
That was included in “and others”.
Oops…
In retrospect, it seems less like a movie and more like a TV variety special. The only thing missing would be a few musical numbers.
What I liked about the movie was Vincent Price as Mr. Scratch. He played the devil in the tradition of Mephistopheles in Goethe’s “Faust”, a charming and sophisticated trickster and seducer who might provoke people to do bad things, but also knows and points out human weaknesses the best.
He was great- also good was Walter Huston as Scratch in The Devil and Daniel Webster.
In the world of movie musicals I’d like to nominate Cabaret. The movie is a bunch of pretty great musical sequences–featuring Joel Grey at his best and Liza at her Liza-est-- held together by a plot that’s hard to follow and even harder to care about.
I saw the stage version in NYC a few months ago with Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin (and Bebe Neuwirth!), and it blew me away. Not only did the plot work, there was a whole new subplot (featuring Neuwirth’s character) that added an emotional backbone and a few great songs. And the way it all played out gave a whole new dimension to the big emotional closer, “Life is a Cabaret”. (Rankin’s performance of it also helped; it was one of the most intense moments I’ve ever seen in a lifetime of theatre. I’m getting chills thinking about it now.)
I wrote afterwards that they had re-written the entire book for this production, but then I watched an old version on YouTube and I realized that its book was exactly what I had seen. It turns out all the changes were made for the movie, for reasons I can’t understand. (It was the 70s, so I’m going to blame cocaine.)
There was a plot?
Oh, yuck… they made a movie out of that?
What a waste of a good story.
Remind me never to watch it by mistake…
Hey, any movie where a Batman villain wins the Oscar for Best Actor can’t be all bad…
Did the books not have any social political agenda? I think Anne with an E is pretty good so far but I can see how those issues can can be grating.
