They whisper, when they come; whisper and mutter and clack their dark fingernails, claws really, which sharpen against one another with a whispering of their own. Worse today, I feel, as the darkness retreats, and the warm sun rises, forcing the moisture from my blistered, cracked lips, bleaching my hair and eyes, watching my life hiss away in wisps of steam. I wish the rocks had killed me when they fell, rather than crushing me, pressing me flat with the weight of ages, squeezing the breath from my lungs to little more than a pinch of air at a time, as I wait in the dark to die. ---
