Cool name. After the late Clash lead guitarist, right? Now you’ve got me huntin’ for “Train In Vain”:).
No pic? I’d like to see a Lab/Bernard mix, whereismy mind>

I used to have a girlfriend who worked in rescue, and every animal that was adopted, she’d ask what the name was going to be.
Her answer to all names were, “He looks like a ________.” But Rufus is aptly named, and what a neat coat, Attack.
Was Ming a Siamese? I think they’re known to be very territorial. Never owned one, though my Mom had 2.
Thanks
Q
I had to look that one up, Sandra, because I’d never heard of the breed, or if I did, I forgot.
Pretty dog. Would you mind posting a pic of yours?
Thanks

Kitties:
Newt came from the rescue with the name “Marcie,” and we had an acquaintance by that name, so I wanted to rename her. We adopted her during a time when Aliens was showing over and over and over on one of the cable channels.
Pierre came with his name and it seemed to suit him.
Scrappy was a tiny orphaned kitten with a wee broken front leg when I rescued him. Once when I was holding him, I remarked that he didn’t seem to weigh more than a scrap of fabric. We started calling him “Scrap,” and eventually his personality came to the fore… he’s remarkably like Scooby Doo’s nephew Scrappy Doo.
Doggy:
Arwen had been in the shelter where I volunteered for over two years, so she was used to her name. It suits her as she is very regal and dignified.
Well, something’s got his attention! Great watchdog, I bet? Good thing you didn’t name him “Tonto”, huh?
“Chooch” fits him though: short and sweet! ![]()

Love the name of the fish! Do you have the walking “Darwin” on the trunk of your car?
Siren’s a cool name for a Dal. Got a lot of complains from the neighbors, huh?
“Muffler”? How about “Muff” for short, or might that be too suggestive?:)![]()
Thanks!

We didn’t name them. We had already decided to name our dogs Gytha and Esme. Their foster mother named them Ginger and Holly and when they got up here, it took all of maybe a minute to realize that those would always be their names.
We did name our fish though. The 4 goldfish are: Vimes (big and really gold - impressive looking), Vetinari (skinny little black moor), Cuddy (standard goldfish), and Carrot (red and white). The little algae eater is Nobby (he’s small and ugly). The big algae is Detritus (he’s huge and gray). They mostly got their names because my boyfriend is a huge Night Watch (Discworld) fan (I love the Watch too but I prefer the witches). I named Vetinari though because what else can we name a black fish in a tank full of Night Watch fish?
Our 13yro black cat is Inigo Montoya, from The Princess Bride. I really wanted to name him after Fezzik, as he a big ole gentle giant himself, but hubby did NOT like that name at all. Sooo…the cat became Inigo, and our catfish became Fezzik. (Catfish just died last year at a ripe age of 12.)
12yro tuxedo kitty is Mija, a Spanish term of endearment. Now, I’m thinking Gordita or Loca would have been better.
Snakes are Cleopatra (Cleo) the corn snake, so named because she has an Egyptian-looking symbol on her head, and Seymour the ball python, named after the lead character in Little Shop of Horrors.
Dog is Ginger–she was already named when we adopted her at age 6.
Horse is Ferrana Moniet, also already named when I bought her at age 14 (she’s almost 23 now, yikes!). Her name is a combination of her father’s (Ferrouge) and mother’s (Anna Moniet). Around the barn, she’s just Ana.
My cat is a very big, extremely lovey redpoint Ragdoll who has a registered name of Angelight’s Sir Seamus McManus, but we call him Shea. He was born on St. Patrick’s day and since we’re both primarily Irish, it just seemed fitting.
Prior to Shea’s arrival, I had a redpoing Siamese rescue kitty whose name was Miss Kitty, Queen of Everything…and she demanded royal treatment for her entire 18 years.
Definitely “multi-animal,” and I don’t think I could ever let Loki run free - besides, she’s a big old coward and she’d hate it. ![]()
I found a picture of my cat Sneakers, an older one from 2009. Love him! Sneakers, 2009 | An older picture of my cat, Sneakers. | StarsApart | Flickr
Bit of an update, resulting in a cool pet name (IMHO).
This past week both Wanda and Princess Leah (daughter informed me her name is properly spelled with an h at the end) died within days of each other. Went to the pet store to buy two new fish. Daughter picked out a small white goldfish named Snowflake, but that’s not the cool one I’m here to discuss.
Before I went to the store yesterday, I knew what kind I wanted to get and what I’d name it. I wanted a red cap goldfish as I knew that would stand out from the two gold coloured ones we have. And I thought of a perfect name for it, being a vexillologist (one who studies flags) - Hinomaru (日の丸) - “Hino” for short. First off, goldfish were first domesticated in Japan, and secxondly the Japanese flag is white with a red circle (like the fish), its nickame among the Japanese people is, yes, Hinomaru.
It wasn’t until later that I realized also that Japan is in the news in a major way the day we bought Hino. Sure, I heard of the event, but I didn’t think much of it, and it didn’t (consciously) affect the name I chose. But I’ll always remember what day we got him.
(Sorry for resurrecting a dead (but hardly zombified) thread, but this is very mundane, pointless, and definitely a “must share”)
Cats need to have formal names as well:
Annie AKA “Fierce Bad Annie the Claw Beast”
Kitty AKA “Dammit Kitty, You Monster”
Theo AKA “Theodolite, Galactic Wonder Cat” (three legs and tabby galaxy swirl on his side)
Tenchi AKA “Tenchi Buyo, Meatloaf Cat” (named after the Japanese anime character)
What their secret real names are has not been revealed to us.
I have a black cat named Merlin. I didn’t name him. But everybody who knows him thinks it’s very fitting.
