OK, I’m a dummy. What is the way to get the search operators AND, OR and NOT to work for me?

You can’t, with our search engine. Unfortunately, we can’t replace it, either, because a change that drastic would void our service agreement with the makers of vBulletin. Fortunately, you can do fancier searches at Boardreader. Unfortunately, they take a while to index stuff, so you can’t find anything too recent.
