There is no possible way I could answer this and have it be accurate and scientifically replicated by asking me the same question a week from now, so I’ll just go with the first ten songs I could think of that I emotionally speak to me every time I hear them: 1. “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys 2. Nocturne Op 9. #2, in E-flat major, Frederick Chopin 3. “Only Shallow” - My Bloody Valentine 4. “1979” - (The) Smashing Pumpkins 5. “So What” - Miles Davis 6. “Dig Me Out” - Sleater-Kinney 7. “Peg” - Steely Dan (this is a recent one that I’ve fallen in love with; like within the last two years. I’m not big into Steely Dan, but this one just does it for me. That groove, man. Rick Marotta on drums, and Chuck Rainey on the bass. God damn.) 8. “Map Ref 41°N 93°W” - Wire 9. “Corner of the Sky” - Original Pippin Cast recording (1972, I think – not the newer one) 10. “Somthing” - Beatles Ask me the same question in a couple of weeks, and you’re likely to get, at best, three of those mentioned again. It’s such a “what mood am I in” question. ---

Hey. I assumed that “songs” mean “songs.” Pieces written for a vocalist with accompaniment. like Schubert or Brahms _lieder_ for singer and piano, or Tin Pan Alley, or blues, or rock. Instrumental art music, like Beethoven’s Violin Sonata No. 9 in A Major (“Kreutzer”), or instrumental jazz, like Louis Armstrong’s “West End Blues,” are RIGHT OUT. ---

This is the very definition of impossible, so I’ll just list the first random-ish 10 that come to mind - which will depend as much on recent listening to any “ultimate” list, and definitely not in _any kind of_ order. One per artist/band. “Underwater Moonlight” - The Soft Boys “The Elements” - Tom Lehrer/Sir Arthur Sullivan “Dogs” - Pink Floyd “The Most Exalted Potentate of Love” - The Cramps “Palace of Love” - Doll by Doll “Amelia” - Joni Mitchell “Aja” - Steely Dan “She Loves You” - The Beatles “Immigrant Song” - Led Zeppelin “Rock Lobster” - The B-52’s Any of these is in rotation with probably half a dozen or more by the same artists, and it looks like I’ve missed out Kate Bush, Bowie and the Bonzos (just the 'B’s) not to mention “One Man Guy” by Louden Wainwright III. Oh well, come back next week and try again. ---
