I’m going to have trouble coming up with only 15, but in the interim let me note how fucking fantastic this subset of albums is:

> [@woodstockbirdybird](#):

> 1. Stereolab - _Emperor Tomato Ketchup_
> 2. Yo La Tengo - _I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One_
> 3. Sleater-Kinney - _Dig Me Out_
> 4. The Magnetic Fields - _69 Love Songs_
> 5. The La’s - _The La’s_
> 6. The Feelies - _Time for a Witness_

Some albums not mentioned previously that I’d put in my Top 15:
Son Volt - _Trace_
Sigur Rós - _Ágætis byrjun_ (An album of the 2000s released in 1999)
Smoking Popes - _Destination Failure_
Whiskeytown - _Faithless Street_
Alice in Chains - _Jar of Flies_ (IMMA GONNA LET YOU FINISH, BUT THIS IS GREATEST EP OF ALL TIME!)
Smashing Pumpkins - _Adore_ (so very underrated)
REM - _New Adventures in Hi-Fi_ (last great effort for the band)

Duplicates include _Siamese Dream_, _Exile in Guyville_, _Kerosene Hat_, _In Utero_, _Ok Computer_, _Automatic for the People_, _Loveless_, _Mellon Collie_

I agree with you. It’s one of their best albums, but a lot of people at the time were bad-mouthing it for not being another _Melon Collie_ and for the whole kerfuffle about Jimmy Chamberlin getting fired. Still, \*Perfect \*and _Appels + Oranjes_ are two of my favorite songs of all time.

Did you check out the ginormous reissue that came out a couple weeks ago? I bought it and it’s got some pretty neat stuff on it. _Adore_ has always been one of my favorite Pumpkins albums, probably my second favorite behind _Siamese Dream_, but it’s really hard to rank, as those first four albums are pretty much unassailable. SD will always be the perfect Pumpkins album for me, though. It seems that _Adore_ has been getting more and more its fair due over the last few years.

3. Superchunk - This is Where the Strings Come In
4. Pavement - Wowee Zowee
5. Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville
6. Nirvana - nevermind

8. Jane’s Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual

1. Never heard of them before, just listened on spotify, think I may need to buy

2. Saw JA supporting The fields of the Nephilim at the Brixton Academy waaaaayy back , this is another album that should make the list.

3. No shit , and looking through this thread is going to lead to a nostalgic few plays list being made up for aeroplane time.

>
> Richard Thompson – Rumor and Sigh (1952 Vincent Black Lightning, anyone?)
>
> Dar Williams – The Honesty Room
>
> Stones in the Road – Mary Chapin Carpenter
>
> Freedom and Rain – The Oysterband and June Tabor
>
> Solace – Sarah McLachlan
>
> Patty Griffin – Living With Ghosts
>
> Loreena McKennitt – The Visit
>
> October Project – October Project
>
> Waterboys – Room to Roam (because Fisherman’s Blues was an 80’s album)
>
> Deserters – Oysterband
>
> Retrospective – Jack Hardy (yes, you’ve never heard of him, but he was the center of the Greenwich Village folk scene for many years)
>
> Salamander Crossing – Bottleneck Dreams
>
> Bill Morrissey – Standing Eight (or maybe Inside, it’s a tough call)
>
> Dream Cafe – Greg Brown
>
> Steve Forbert – The American in Me
> A few honorable mentions:
>
> Whatever – Aimee Mann (knocked down in the the honorable mentions mostly for lack of room, but partly because the ever present whiff of gothy self pity grates after a while.)
>
> Little Earthquakes – Tori Amos
>
> Never Enough – Melissa Etheridge
>
> Cowboy Junkies Pale Sun/Crescent Moon

It overlaps with mine. Thank you for making my list for me, **Finagle**.

(Though I’d scoot Living With Ghosts up to the top and substitute Too Long in the Wasteland, by James McMurtry and XO, by Elliott Smith for, …something or other.)

Lots of mine have been mentioned but I’ll add these.
Morphine-_Cure for Pain_ and _Yes_. Hard to choose between these two. Both are excellent.
Soul Coughing-_Ruby Vroom, Irresistible Bliss_ and _El Oso_ could all make the list but I would probably go with _Irresistible Bliss_.
Marcy Playground-_Marcy Playground_ and _Shapeshifter_. They get labeled as one hit wonders for “Sex and Candy” but their first two albums are great.

I almost added _El Oso_ to my list. I haven’t heard the others. I foresee a lot of music acquisition in my near future.
