I’ll say one thing, if I recall correctly, that the website of those guys at TIGHAR has lots of evidence that you may read and form your own opinions afterward. At least that’s what I did about a year and a half ago, lots of evidence and good links for more research, enough for me to have a good handle on what I believe are the facts. Tighar and others with their opinion of what happened to Fred and Amelia (that they flew to Nikumaroro) are way off base but they do show lots evidence for what happened that day and what happened at that point in the big attempt by Ms. E for an historic flight.

> Wide-ranging speculation exists about how the pit was formed and what it might contain. According to Joe Nickell, there is no treasure; the pit is a natural phenomenon, probably a sinkhole connected to limestone passages or caverns.[2] Suggestions that the pit is a natural phenomenon (accumulated debris in a sinkhole or geological fault) date to at least 1911.[40][41][42][43] A number of sinkholes and underground caves, to which the “booby traps” are attributed, exist on the mainland near the island.
>
> Its resemblance to a human-made pit has been suggested as partly due to the texture of natural, accumulated debris in sinkholes: “This filling would be softer than the surrounding ground, and give the impression that it had been dug up before”.[43] The “platforms” of rotten logs have been attributed to trees, damaged by “blowdowns” (derechos) or wildfires, periodically falling (or washing into) the hollow.[44]

And:

> At the invitation of Boston-area businessman David Mugar, a two-week survey was conducted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1995 (the only known scientific study conducted on the site). After running dye tests in the bore hole, the institution concluded that the flooding was caused by a natural interaction between the island’s freshwater lens and tidal pressures in the underlying geology (refuting the man-made tunnel theory).

Without much better evidence, it would be illogical and irresponsible to conclude it _isn’t_ a sinkhole with naturally-accumulated debris in it: That’s the least hypothesis, and nothing seems to refute it.

[Here’s a Skeptical Inquirer article on the subject, which concludes it’s a natural sinkhole and that the legend surrounding it is a Masonic allegory attached to a convenient pseudo-mystery, like any number of “Golden Legends” attached to semi-historical or pseudohistorical saints.](https://www.csicop.org/si/show/secrets_of_oak_island)

I think the flood shaft theory is false. There are some good websites out there that explain how they made salt for fishing using the trenches filled with fiber, etc. The one drain they did find, which would have to connect to the money pit to work, only went down 28 feet.

But that only reinforces how ingenious they were back then. I doubt many people today could come up with such an intricate system if they did not have some prior knowledge. Line the tidal flats with rocks and coconut husks and produce a never ending supply of concentrated salt solution? Humbug.
