Zell Miller on DAILY SHOW: why I love Jon Stewart, part 301

I doubt it. They got a number of complaints about 20 years ago when, in recounting the testimony of a policeman’s account of what a business owner said in regards to an industrial accident, when they printed the phrase, “Fuck him, he’s dead, anyways.”

All I could think about when I saw this thread title was Will Forte and his incredible ability to make his face redder and redder right in front of your eyes.

And that forehead vein…

“Class act” is exactly what I thought after that interview was over. He’s always so courteous and warm toward his interviewees (except, of course, when they try to feed him spin) – I remember he had Ed Koch (former NYC mayor, for non-USans) on before the election, and Koch outright endorsed Bush for the presidency. The audience booed rather robustly, and Stewart gave them this annoyed “Settle down” look, and proceeded to ask Koch a series of very gracious questions about his political philosophy, and spoke about what he [Stewart] felt Bush was doing right.

IIRC, his exact words to Miller were “I know your heart’s in the right place, and I think you’re a good man,” which is such a lovely thing to say to anyone.

Or, as my mother said when we were talking about it a few days later: “I absolutely adore him, he’s intelligent, funny, and classy. I wouldn’t mind having him for a son-in-law. [pause] Or a second husband.”

Jon Steward is a smart as hell, funny, and a real class act. Exactly that antidote that’s needed for the obscene banality of the news media.

And don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t kick Jon Stewart out of bed for eating crackers.

But since I read an article Stephen Colbert wrote about playing D&D in high school, and heard his interview with Terry Gross, I . . . I wants to have his babies.

Didn’t the “Colbehr Repoor” (It’s French, bitch.) start out as just a gag commercial on TDS? It’s awesome that they’re actually giving Colbert a show.

Real quick-like, before I start the Pit thread, tell me why you think Miller’s accent might be a valid reason for Stewart to “go after” Miller or anyone else.

Because it’d be funny. He’s made fun of folks (not to their face) for less.

I too noted the lack of opposition here. Perhaps, besides Jon’s good manners, he was also aware that anyone tuning in to TDS didn’t really need anyone to rebutt Miller’s positions. They mocked themselves quite nicely.

Because it’s a quick and easy laugh and thick regional accents are and have always been a source of easy humor for comedians.

Yours,

U. Sampiro (who was born on a cattle farm in Weokahatchee, Alabama [population 10] and honestly thought the word for having considered something was “figgered” until he was a teenager and who thought he could decipher any Southern accent until he heard audiotapes of Flannery O’Connor)

Someone find me audio of the extended Laura Bush jokes, that was freaking hysterical.

Zell Miller has been giving us hillbillies a bad name lately. (Which takes some doing.)

I can’t figure out what happened to the guy. He used to be a thoughtful, progressive Democratic governor. When his second term ended there was a general consensus that he’d been one of the best governors in Georgia history.

Somewhere along the line a switch got flipped, and he has turned into a raving right-winger. A lot of Georgia Democrats are feeling betrayed.

I didn’t catch the Daily Show when he was on. I gather he came across as more reasonable than has lately been the case?

Yeah, I think you and Otto have the right one.

Me neither.

I don’t think he was saying it would be valid to make fun of his accent, just that it would be easy, and it’s pretty rare to see a comedian not go after the easy joke.
