Ok, the SD server is having trouble handling the flood of dopers, so we’re reopening the BbBoy forum to ease the strain while we try to sort things out. If the SD board is running slow for you, feel free to visit Dope II: http://bb.bbboy.net/straightdope
So you lucky mods get to moderate both board now, huh? Ugh.
Have you considered closing all the forums and creating a test forum, or closing all but one forum while the new software is debugged? That should take the strain off the server as most people will take their convos to the temp board.
We are getting a zoomy new server sometime soon (on order now), so that will help the board a lot.
I suppose we could switch it all back to the temp board, but it feels kind of like backtracking. And some people just prefer the real Dope (and like lots of swearing and talking about sex).
 Yaaaaay!!!
Now we are so happy, we do the dance of joy!

The new server may not show up for a month or more (though maybe we’ll get lucky), so don’t get too excited. And then it has to get set up and stuff. But I have high hopes for the board running better once we have it set up.
::Preview is your friend::
No, really? Honest-to-God, a new server? REALLY? No, I don’t believe it.
REALLY!? You promise, cross your heart, Gaudere?
Wow. A server. Wow.
Just posting to say that just because m-w can’t find the word, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. That dictionary isn’t always the best at finding words that are derived, such as the adjective or adverb form.
The only way to know for sure for such words is to access the entry for the root word, then check the derivations of that root.
As it happens though I couldn’t find “zoomy” in m-w using this method either
pan
yay! i feel at home again!
It also helps if you check a better dictionary; m-w.com is fairly limited. The OED does have an entry for zoomy:
I can’t wait for Gaudere to get an impressively large, fast, and powerful “server”.
[Plead][Whine]There won’t be gulp any [Sob]downtime[/Sniff] while the new server is going in, will there?[/Beg][/Grovel]
Yeah. We’re gettin’ a new busboy, too. And maybe even a bartender that knows how to make a rusty nail properly.
And there was much rejoicing
yeaaa…
Yay for the new server.
I personally wouldn’t mind *not /I] to say “fuck” every three minutes.
I rather have a fast site.
While you’re getting a server, perhaps you can get a butler, a maid, and a cook, too, so he doesn’t have to carry the whole load.
(Damn Unclebeer, beat me to it.)
Ummmm…before this gets rolling I’d better start deflating people’s expectations. The SDMB is not getting a new server. The old SDMB server is just doing something else at the moment and when the Reader’s new server arrives you’ll be once again running on the old SDMB server.
Of course, I took the recent downtime opportunity (isn’t that a nice euphemism?) to beef up the old SDMB server. You should be getting something a little better than what you had. Are things going to be faster? Maybe… When? Sometime in the future… Sorry I can’t be more specific but a) I don’t know what the end result will be and b) I’ve learned never to promise anything…especially that the current situation will be “better real soon now”. It probably will not be and if it is better any excess capacity will be quickly used up with a resultant return of the slowness. Case in point, the 40% speedup we put in place in August 2001 was almost completely unnoticeable by October 2001 due to a comparable 40% increase in demand.
Jerry
Thanks for the clarification, Jerry. And thanks for all the work you’ve done on our behalf. It’s good to point out that we may not have any noticable increase in board speed, even with upgrades to the server. In a way, that’s a good sign about the health of the SDMB. I think we all learn that now matter how new, fast, big a computer we get, it always seems to get to capacity too soon.
