Well, why is it?
I’m glad the SDMB is back from the abiss, but why oh why is it so slow? Is this just temporary until things “settle down”, or is this it?
Oooh, I dunno, 5,000 desperate returning Dopers, frantically attempting to find out how bad the damage is could have some small impact…

That’s what I hope it is, tisiphone. I am desparately trying to convince myself that it will speed up. The temporary board was much faster, and so is Fathom (where a bunch of us hung out during outages, and some of us desided to stay after the SDMB return). I know there must be some slowness due to sheer volume at this time, I’m just hoping it ain’t gonna be like this for long!!
I thought it was because I was only able to connect today at 26,400 bps :mad:

You know they upgraded the bulletin board server to a screaming PII-266 with 32MB of memory!!! Much faster than the 486SX that it used to be on. Must be the bloated code from Jelsoft!!

No, I have to agree. The temp board was much faster. I think I’ll wander over to the tech board and see if there’s any answers up there…I’ll probably be there in about a week or two.

I don’t get all this 5,000 users makes it slow crap. Plenty of web-sites get lots of traffic and they don’t constantly suck when trying to load a page.

Not that I agree with the people who are whinning but I very much doubt there has every been anywhere near 5k logged onto or viewing this site site at anyone time.
The site’s been slow constantly for me even in the morning when the majority of you Yanks are in dreamland. I know that the baords only back and there are issues with it and it’s a free site blah blah blah but it has been slow.
I’m not complaining and until I pay for this service I won’t.

Gimme a break, alpha. I understand computers/internet/bandwidth/too many fuckin’ people like me tryintousededamnthingallatonce issues. I am not complaining about the service provided here by the Reader in any way, or bitching about gift horse’s gums.
What I am saying is, I enjoy this place, and I wish I could get at the threads quicker so I could read more of them. I don’t miminize the difficulty of running this thing with no budget. If you didn’t catch that sentiment before, I hope it’s abundatly clear now.

I was just pointing out that everyone seems defensive about this. I know we all love the boards, but c’mon admit it: They are way too slow! And everyone claiming that 5,000 users are this huge burden is just stupid.
No, you’re stupid. This ain’t rocket science. The bandwidth is too much for the server. That’s obvious. And there isn’t any other explanation. So, stop staring, and eat your checkers.
