As long as I can remember I have heard that Ted Williams was born to a Mexican mother or was Mexican-American. I’ve never seen this acknowledged in the media at all, but stories about it are certainly out there, and even an internet search at least confirms that this isn’t an isolated rumor. Some even claim he changed his name as a young man. It’s certainly been in print.
Anyone else hear this? I don’t think this was something that was hidden, I just think Ted came along at a time when people were expected to be ‘all-American’, and frankly Mexican-Americans were not really acknowledged as a group - outside of the southwest maybe.
I’m sure most people think Ted looks completely “Anglo” or white, but he did look like some lighter white-Mexican people I know, and many people I know who are half Anglo and half “mestizo” Mexican look completely “white” anyway. I think thats why the rumor is persistent.
