What a DAG!!!!!!!!

This MPSIMS will probably be only of interest to the Aussies out there...

Anywaaaaaaay, when I first moved to NYC I discovered they had this grocery store chain in Manhattan called D'Agastino's and their shopping bags cracked me up every time I saw people obliviously walking around carrying them. In HUGE letters on the bag was "DAG BAG".

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!!

*A "dag" for those non-Aussies out there is a mild insult which basically means dork. (It's official meaning has something to do with sheep doody, but I won't go there, m'kay?)

Oddly, in NZ calling someone a "Dag" means that they're a good sport / good humoured / a bit of a joker... basically a good bloke.

Yet another opportunity for NZ/Oz misunderstanding.

Literrally, dags are the crusty dried bits of sheep poo that get stuck in their wool.

In case you wanted to know.

Apollyon, it sort of means that in Aus. as well. It depends how you say it. It is definitely one of those very friendly insults that you could use to a good friend's face as a joking rebuff over some minor episode without them taking offense. It can also be used as a compliment in a back handed way eg you might use the term about someone who you think is a bit of a goofy dork but overall a nice bloke.

I agree with Princhester. A dag is either someone who is mildly amusing and you really like, or someone who is wearing decade old fashions and is slightly out of step with everyone else. There is no reason why a single dag can not be both of those people.

I've always liked the brand ROOTS. A year ago when I was in Canada I brought back hats for everyone in my office from there.

Thanks Princhester and cazzle. I think in that case it means almost exactly the same thing here in NZ.

I agree with Apollyon. In my circles, "He's a bit of a dag, ain't he?" tends to mean someone's a "hard case", with enough sardonic wit and aspect on life that he's pleasantly memorable and a good bloke to know. Not often applied to women, I've found.

Explaining it isn't as much fun as saying it and knowing what it means!

We had a bad TV show starring David Alan Grier and ... one of the designing women. It was called DAG for the lead.

I thought to myself ... ooh, they might have wanted to put a little research into that name,
