Amazing story on 'self-dentistry' -- anyone remember?

This thread on the anesthetic effects of PCP got me thinking of a story I saw on the Daily Show many years ago. I’m pretty sure the reporter was Beth Littleford, which would date it to as early as 1997.

Beth interviewed a guy who had replaced all of his own teeth, himself, using power tools. If memory serves, the teeth were replaced with bright white rocks, shaped with the power tools.

I remember wondering if it was an April Fool’s joke – pulling teeth by yourself would be incredibly painful, but at least possible. But replacing them? With rocks???

Does anyone remember this story? Or hear about the guy elsewhere?

I did hear an interview with this guy several years ago while I was in Raleigh. As I remember it, he needed extensive work and could not afford to have it done by a dentist so he basically taught himself dentistry.

I distinctly remember him describing how to give yourself a root canal - not particularly something I would want to try.

I have a dentist who related the following. He’s the senior partner in a 3 guy office. On a Sunday afternoon when the office was closed, he developed root canal pain…couldn’t contact either of his partners…and you know what’s coming next…went to the office and did his own root canal! Had the finishing touches done the next day, but got rid of his pain. Yikes!

It’s been the better part of a year, and I was thinking about this topic recently, so I thought I’d bump my own thread and ask if anyone knows any more about this guy who replaced his own teeth.

Yep, I remember that story. As I recall, he got the rocks out of his driveway.

They looked a little odd - I mean, they looked like teeth, but they were shaped kind of oddly or something. They definitely had an artificial look to them.
