Does anyone smoke cigarettes oither than Camel and Marlboro?
I'm not a smoker, but I've noticed that EVERYBODY ... I eman EVERYBODY that I know who smokes cigarettes sticks with:
1) Marlboro. 2) Camel, or Kamel is you have eyeglasses with square shaped lenses. 3) Menthol brands, like Newport or Kool. 3) Generic or discount Indian reservation brand. I have never seen anyone go into a store, and say "Gimme a pack of Kents" or "Hand me a carton of Pall Malls." My question to the smoking masses ... does ANYONE here smoke old school cigarettes like Lucky Strike, L&M, Parliament or Chesterfield? |

Every once in a while, I step down to cigarillos, but that's about it. In any case, it's pure tobacco (cigar or pipe) for me. Paper just gets in the way. If I'm gonna poison meself, I'll do it straight.

My father, last time I checked, smokes Dorals.
There's a flyer in all the toilet stalls in my dorm bathrooms about cigarette companies marketing to the 18-24 year old market. It states that something like 80-some% of younger smokers smoke the top three advertised brands - Marlboro, Camel, and Newport - while less than half of older smokers do so. I have no idea what their source on this is, and I don't feel like going to the bathroom to check, but it makes sense, I suppose, because my generation is a bunch of sheeple, led very strongly by advertising. |

My grandma smoked all the cool old brands- Pall Mall, Viceroy. I think it was Viceroy that made a non-filtered cig with a filter painted on the butt!
My brother smokes American Spirit. When I smoked, I was mostly a Benson & Hedges girl, also Mild Sevens when I could get them at our local Asian market. For a glimpse of a lost art, rent the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral and check out Kristin Scott Thomas deftly and daintily spitting out tobacco bits from her unfiltered cig! The kind of thing Kate Hepburn could have done well. |

I used to smoke Salems. At some point they changed them slightly and I didn't like them anymore, so I switched to Basics Menthol, which are actually pretty good for a off-brand.
Marlboro Menthol Lights frequently come in 2 for the price of 1 promotional packs, though, so lately I smoke those. Advertising does have an effect on the type of cigarettes people smoke.......when I smoked Salems, for instance, they were regarded by other people as "old woman smokes", as opposed to the Newports or Kools that they preferred, which were "cool" cigarettes. Of course they only smoked those because EVERYBODY else did. One advantage of smoking less-popular brands is that people aren't so inclined to bum off of you. |

Well, I smoke Winstons.
Winstons have a good taste and they are somewhat stronger than Marlboros. My Aunt and Uncle smoked Pall Malls. I bummed a Pall Mall from my uncle and I almost died after the first drag. Pall Malls are the *real* coffin nails. Anyway, I am working on quiting smokes. It is a very hard thing to do. (Kids, never ever pick up a smoke. If you do you will hate the habit) I wish I never started smoking. (I say this as I take a drag from a smoke). Slee |

My mother smoked Kent's when I was younger, then Basics. Then whatever generic cheap ass cigarette she could get.
Now that she's quite gainfully employeed, she enjoys Marlboro. My girl smokes Winston, my brother smokes Kool. |

Since they jacked the price of Marlboro Lights to like, 40kr here, I smoke Basic Lights (also by Phillip Morris) for 25kr instead. The only differnce I notice is they are less well made (burn unevenly etc). I guess they make them from the "rough bits" of the leaf they use for Marlboro Lights.
MrsIteki smokes Kent Ultra Light. When travelling we smoke Gauloises, Dunhill or cutsie little tasty little Davidhoffs. |

I started off with British smokes, and the first time I tried a Marlboro I was rather surprised at how damn nasty it was. Ended up giving the rest of the pack away to a co-worker, and going back to my usual brand.
Fast forward a few years, when I was out camping in the middle of nowhere. I ran out of smokes, and my pal offered me a pack of Marlboros from his stash, which I grudgingly accepted out of sheer neediness. By the end of the pack I was converted, and have stuck with them ever since. Only problem is, when you pull out a pack of Marlboros in the UK, everyone wants to bum one. Later they'll offer me one of their brand-X smokes, knowing full well I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. Grrrrr! |

My cigarette evolution -
Started with Salem's but after a while got tired of the menthol and moved to Winston's (guess we're I'm from. originally), eventually the Winston's became too much for me and a friend talked me down to Virginia Slims, when VS came out with 120's I switched to them till we wnet to Italy and I could no longer buy VS 120's, I tried going back to regular VS lights but they didn't tast right and since it was easier to buy I type of cigarette, I switched to Marlboro Lights which Hubby was smoking and finally to Marlboro Ultra Lights. During the original VS phase I also smoked Silks and a few other brands that didn't make it. But when I have to bum a smoke, I'm not choosy(choosey).

Yes!
Im a 27 year old smoker in Florida, I agree most everyone smokes Marlboro, Camel or Kools. I smoke Winston regular and Parliment, and heres why...
1. If I smoke Marlboro Reds, I get all kinds of weird aches and pains. 2. If I smoke Marlboro Lights, I cough up and hack stuff up for the next 24 hours. This is due to more chemicals being in the cigarteete to make it lighter I would assume. 3. If I smoke Menthols, just forget it! 4. If I smoke Camel, I cant breathe good, Camel used to be my favorite brand.. 5. When I smoke Winstons I can breathe and dont have any pains or hack up anything, but thats just me.. ![]() PS: Everyone always thinks Parliment cigs are generic, when in fact there not, I smoke them sometimes because I always get coupons in the mail giving me free packs of them

Benson & Hedges Gold, full flavor here. Husband is a Winston man. I used to smoke Viceroy (we'd cop 'em off my girlfriend's mother) and then I smoked Marlboro. My ex didn't like the smell of Marlboro, so I switched to Merit briefly, and then to B&H. I've been there for around 25 years. I love them. I truly love them!

What about old man cigarettes, like Lucky Strikes or Chesterfield? I have a hard time grasping the idea that back in the 1940s, a bunch of high schoolers would go to a local store, and actually say "Hey, Pops, how about a pack of Chesterfields? Doc says that they're healthier because they're streamlined!"
I advised a friend that she should carry around a pack of Lucky Strike filterless around with her when she went clubbing, so nobody would bum cigs from her. Folks were thrown aback, but then they thought she was some sort of cigarette expert, and ask her all sorts of questions about British smokes. Strange. |

Dorals are OK in a pinch, so are Winstons (but only the S2s). But Spirits are the best!! (Damned $37 a carton!!) My husband and I last about a week on a carton. Depends on how stressful my week is and whether or not we go to my brother's on Saturday night. |

Me, I'm one of those annoying "social smokers"--I like to smoke, but rarely do (these days, probably about 4 times a year), and have never allowed myself to do so on a regular basis, because I don't want to compromise my health any more than I already do with my rabid love of bacon. However, if you get one too many margaritas in me, I'm the pest at the bar who taps you on the shoulder and offers you a quarter for one of your cigs.Which means I ain't picky. I don't know if this is good or bad; I know someone with a spouse who drinks . . . a little too much. While she acknowledges this about her hubby, she takes comfort in the fact that he won't drink certain things (wine, for example), because her idea is that a true alcoholic will drink anything that'll get him/her drunk. Whether or not you agree with this theory, it doesn't bode well when applied to my smoking habits--I will, pretty much, smoke anything (beggars can't be choosers, after all), so does that make me a true smoker?

I quit smoking 2 years ago. I smoked Chesterfields while I was in Europe and would have smoked them here in the States except I could never find filtered versions of them.
I remember being thrilled when a friend went to Europe and bought me two cartons of them. I stretched those out over a month. |

Salem Slim Light 100's.
I've smoked the occasional Virginia Slim, and the occational Capri, even (they are those tiny little cigs that look like toothpicks). I actually like the Capris, but I feel like a dunce smoking them!! My old boss smoked Vantage, and another boss smoked Benson & Hedges. I think those are the right names.

I've never smoked Camels or Marlboros.
I was a longtime Winston smoker, starting back in high school (that would be in the mid-70s). Don't know why, I just liked them. Then sometime in college I switched to a milder brand, Merits. Then from there to Merit Ultra-Lights. Now I'm down to Carltons, which is about as close to not smoking as one can get, I guess. But, god, I miss those Winstons. Maybe I'll buy just one pack tonight. It is the weekend, after all. By the way, I'm in New York City, where our esteemed Mayor has raised cigarette taxes so that a pack now costs $7.50. Also, starting in April, smoking will be forbidden in bars. What is this, fucking Berkeley, for god's sake? If I can't have a drink and a smoke in a bar after a hard day at work, something has really gone wrong and it's time for the revolution to begin. |

Wimps.
I roll my own. Drum tobacco is the best, but hard to come by sometimes. Several knockoffs of Drum, Jason and BaliShag for instance, are almost as good. Very mild, very inexpensive, you don't smoke quite as much as it really isn't easy to roll one while you are doing 65 on the freeway or when you are walking, and you can roll them as thick or thin as you like. I usually get 50 to a pack. |

I've been a Virginia Slims gal for the past 14 years, but I like Benson & Hedges as an alternative. I prefer slim cigarettes, because guys usually won't ask to bum smokes from a chick who smokes V-slims.
I just tried my first Pall Mall a few minutes ago, because the store next door is out of almost everything... not bad, but I miss my skinny girly smokes. |

![]() Looks like I'm going to have to start offering more than a quarter for a smoke . . . I lived in the Bay Area when the ordinance came down against smoking in bars (at the time I left, they were working on an ordinance whereby you couldn't smoke in your own home if, say, a plumber or other service worker was there), but there was a way around it (besides standing outside). My friend John was a smoker, and he and I (and his GF) would often go to a TINY! little hole-in-the-wall bar (seriously no bigger than a shoebox). It was pretty much a one-man operation, see, and because the logic behind the ordinance was that bar employees should not be subjected to second hand smoke, he could still allow smoking in his bar, because he didn't HAVE any employees. Sometimes his wife (gf?) would come in and help him in a pinch, but she wasn't on any official payroll, so there you have it. We'd go to our favorite little breakfast place late on a Saturday morning, and then hit the bar (which was on the same block) when it opened at noon. Al Green was on the jukebox (but he wasn't on the payroll, either, so it was still OK )Good times. Anyway, if you know of any tiny little bars, you might see if one of them could provide a loophole. |

Judging by the empty packs strewn about the neighborhood there are a ton of kids that smoke Parliament menthol and regular. Plenty of Camel smokers too but they are outnumbered four to one. I say "kids" because most adults around here don't pitch empty packs out of their car window.

I don't smoke, but I thought I'd add that I sell a pack of rare stuff like kent or carlton or lucky strike cigarettes maybe once every 10 hours of working, and we're fairly busy.
By far, the most common cigarette sale is marlboro lights - they outsell regular marlboro by 4:1 or so, and camel (all types) by 2 or 2.5 to 1. |
