Hooray for Hollywood
This was truly a banner year for the Oscars.
A fiction film wins for Best Documentary. The Best Director cannot accept because he's a fugitive drug-raping pedophile. Homewrecker wins Best Supporting Actress. And for the first time in Academy history, a song which features mulitple uses of the word "motherfuck" wins Best Song. (Though it was still less offensive than anything by Randy Newman.) Pat yourself on the back, industry. You did good. I'm sure the appearance of Peter O'Toole's award was just some much needed irony. What with the only appearance of class and all. |

Unless you want to berate O'Toole for being one of the most notorious lushes in the industry.

"Homewrecker"???? Yeah, like it's totally her fault for the breakup of the marriage. I haven't heard that term used in years!

And what's more...
Perhaps her "sins" were a little more public than most. So people who have deep dark secrets can be nominated and those people who don't wear masks can't be. I adore Peter O'Toole! I really think he should have won for Lawrence of Arabia. I haven't seen Roman Polanski's film but I understand that some consider it his best. If it's better than Chinatown, then it's really something! (I did think that the standing ovation by some was a little much, but I assume it was for the film.) If he did the best job of directing, then he deserves the Oscar. I was hoping that Martin Scorsese would finally win. But despite my own choices, I still don't understand how you can direct the 'best movie' and not win "best director." |

Ok, I must be really falling behind on American slang. How, exactly, does one rape a drug?

While I think Roman Polanski is a rather scuzzy character - I think that if we have the pretense of judging work on it's own merit, there is no reason why his Pianist should not be recognized if it truly is the best film of the lot.

Err, "Homewrecker"?? My memory is a little fuzzy. Please enlighten. When did CZJ wreck a home?

I agree with the OP--I mean, everyone knows the Oscars were established as awards for moral rectitude, not actual artistic merit. And besides, nothing that isn't completely morally upright could be of any artistic value whatsoever. I've certainly noticed that people who have less than stellar personal lives are unable to act or write or direct well, or produce anything at all of value.
Right? |

K and K, what, precisely, did you think they were voting on? I'll betchya $100 there wasn't a single item on the ballot related to pedophilia, infidelity, or drug rapists. And, by the way, where do you get the fictitious documentary comment from? You should put a jacket on...your right wing is showing.

Michael Douglas' marriage was over before CZJ, came into the picture, he may not have been divorced yet, but I'm sure he was separated, when MD and CZJ became an item. I know he married her because she became pregnant.

Michael Douglas was all sexually addicted and floozing around on his first wife for a long time before Catherine came into the picture. If I remember correctly, she put a clause in the pre-nup that states that if he floozes on her, it'll cost him $1M the first time, $5M the second time, or something like that. Smart cookie, that Catherine!

In fact, I hire a private investigater before I view any movie or TV show, to verify that everybody involved in the production, from the producer down to the guy driving the honey wagon, is of proper moral stature. I hesitate to think of the scenario where I might actually view someone who might not be quite as morally upright as myself. I used to love "Hogan's Heroes", but then I found out about Bob Crane's incredibly sordid life. Now I am in therapy. |

Gee Kang and Kodos, your collection of books, music, art and film created by artists who have never sinned must be quite extensive. Whadaya got, a couple of Celine Dion albums and a room full of paintings by Thomas Kinkade?
As has been pointed out in this thread already, the Academy Awards are presented for the artisic merit of the film, not the moral fiber of the artists. Is what Polanski did do that poor young girl despicable? Absolutely. Is The Pianist a phoenominal film, worthy of its praise and awards? IMHO, absolutely. The fact that Polanski may be scum as a human being does not make the film less stellar, any more than does the fact that the film being stellar make what he did all those years ago any less heinous. If you really can't seperate the two, than I pity you for obviously missing out on the drug-addled work of Poe, the art of whore-visting Van Gogh, and the alchohol inspired writings of Brendan Behan, just to start a very, very, very long list. |

Does Canada have a lower per capita rate? Did K-Mart(I think) stop selling those bullets? Where those kids shot? Is McVeigh a nut? Are the international incidents made up by MM? Did he get a gun from a Bank? Are the militia in the movie real? Did that moron make lots of napalm? Are some journalists two faced manipulative pricks? God I have to see that film again I've forgotten the rest? The Dick Clark thing. That did seem silly but is it fiction? This should be a fun hijack

Well, I'd offer my opinion, but I once had sex with a communist goat in a crack den while swindling orphans.
So I guess I'll just keep it to myself. -Trion (Oscar voter) |

Interesting that your screen name is that of two characters of a man who has been forced to publicly apologize to both Rio and New Orleans. Does that mean you should dump your screen name? (And this is by someone who's peeved at what won Best Song) |

I'd guess K&K, as the cities have taken umbrage to their portrayal in the Simpsons.
Mostly due to the Simpsons showing Carnival/Marti Gras, and the cities not seeing it as funny. |

No IIRC Marge came out after the Streetcar! episode (a seperate episode) and explained how she thought she would have to make an apology to the city of New Orleans but they did not recieve any complaints.
My big problem with Roman winning is that I didn't think The Pianist was a very good film. I don't think Brody should have won either. |
