Creature of Havoc and other fighting fantasy novels

Hey does anybody remember these fighting/fantasy novels ?
I must have played all but a few of these roleplaying lite books between the ages of 12-15. I even stole a couple from our local bookstore, thats how hooked I was.

What is your favourite? I loved 'Creature of Havoc' where you started the game as an unknown creature filled with bloodlust and no memories, with an incredible urge to kill hobbits and taste their warm blood. The cool part was that at the start whenever you came across a creature they would speak in some garbles language but later on in the book things would trigger in your memory and a code was given to you allowing you to translate the garbled speech. Brilliant, I felt like I had learned a new language at the time.

The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Midnight Rogue we also favourites.

None of those titles sound familiar to me, however I did read a lot of books back in the day that were of the "Choose Your Own Adventure" series.

All that jazz with skipping pages to make choices in the story. I loved em! They were the video games of the 70s and 80s.

I never got into Fighting Fantasy , though I did know some other kids who had the books. I was a big "Choose Your Own Adventure" fan too.

There's a pretty neat web site, Demian's Gamebook Web Page which has a pretty comprehensive listing of gamebooks of all sorts. I stopped reading CYOA books around the time of #50-60, but I hadn't realized that the series eventually reached almost 200 titles!

It seems like there aren't too many of this kind of book published anymore. I guess video and computer games did make them obsolete.

Speaking of which, does anyone remember an old Apple II program called Story Tree? It let you write your own "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories. I used it in junior high; it was lots of fun.

I used to love those books back when I was a lad, but once when we moved they got lost in the shuffle. I bought a couple on eBay for a song a few years ago and they're still kinda fun.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I see you're from Scotland, so I hate you -- the North American publisher for FF gamebooks stopped after #21, Trial of Champions. I've never played, let alone seen any of the ones that came after that.

To make a long story short, my username comes from the Lone Wolf series of gamebooks by Joe Dever and Ian Page. I'd have to say that after those, Steve Jackson's Sorcery! was the bestest series ever.

But FF always has a place in my heart. The inside cover of my book #9 - Caverns of the Snow Witch - has a little note from my father who bought it for me the day I fell off my bike and abraded the hell out of my face.
