Something has attached itself to my browser and I want it to die. Horribly.

Apparently, I picked up a hitchiker on my browser and I don’t know how to get it off. I deleted all my cookies and emptied my temporary folder and searched for the file name so I could be sure I nailed it, all to no avail. Basically, what happens is when I open my broswer (Explorer) I get a little menu bar popping up on the bottom of my screen with several search options. Another little taskbar opens up also, with the name:

http://17384.wabu.com/passthrough/popupbaropener.html

It also constantly opens up pop up ads, whether I am using the computer or not (I have a DSL connection that is always connected if the computer is on). I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it. How do I get rid of it?

Run AdAware:

Then switch your browser to Mozilla Firebird:

http://mozilla.org/projects/firebird

Open up c:\windows\downloaded program files and have a look if it appears in there; if it does, you should be able to right-click and remove.

I have the same problem, lol.

I hate the internet. God.

What I do is, when my programs are starting up, I ctrl alt delete and find the program. It’s just random words and numbers. It doesnt permanently delete it though. But that’s good enough until you can get rid of it with adaware.

Any chance it’s perhaps hotbar?
Go through add/remove and take a gander for it. If it’s in there… remove it.

Then, as black455 has already pointed out… do a scan with ad-aware.

I’d also suggest Spybot Search & Destroy – it lets you prevent some of these from getting onto your computer in the first place.

Something similar to this happened on a public shared computer I use that runs Windows 98. Both Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer have an extra toolbar with stupid links like, “shopping”, “travel”, and “porn”. AdAware didn’t find it, and Add/Remove Programs and Task Manager didn’t work either, because it runs within Explorer. The only clue I had to its name was looking at the active toolbars. This one was called something like, “czjbwwmf”, which returned no hits in Google.

I use Netscape on that computer anyway, but it’s still annoying not to be able to get rid of it.

Neurotik, did your try to right click on it & see if their is an option to delete it? You could reinstall your browser too, but save your bookmarks first.

Sounda like you have Save! attached to your browser. Save! is a pos Spyware program that claims it isn’t Spyware. It is VERY difficult to remove as it tends to come back even after removal. Using Search and Destroy (as noted above) is the best start. Then get a progam called Hijack This! and use it to completely remove Save! and it’s annoying cousin-programs that you also probably have attached and don’t realize it.
