My God, Bisexual Woman....What has become of you?

I was born in 1972. I graduated high school in 1990. My thoughts of the BI WOMAN then were always held in the highest regard.

They were sexy, passionate, secretive, incredibly rare. A once in a lifetime phenomenon. The four-leaf clover, white buffalo, and a blue moon rolled into one.

So what in the fuck has happened in just 10 years?

Here's what: 18-24 year old bi chicks have exploded like a virus onto the dating scene.

They create webpages of themselves kissing other women playfully.

They troll in chatrooms looking for threesomes. (How sexually world-weary can you be at age 19 to troll for threesomes?)

They wear their BI like a badge of public honor.

And yet all this time, I can't help thinking that this nouveau female bisexuality is nothing more than today's fashion statement. Tats, piercings, bi. It makes sense, I guess. I blame the MTV and GIRLS GONE WILD.

Note to self, Do not give the party girls an opportunity to be as sexually obnoxious as possible.

All in all, shame on you, teen BI GIRLS for taking something that used to be so deliciously sacrilegious and devilishly dirty and turning it into a mainstream trend.

We've really lost something here.

Trendy teen BIs, may God damn you to hell.

MrSarcasticus, we've discussed the phenomenon before. Many of them are doing it for effect. Do you really think an 18-24 year old girl would make a webpage of herself kissing another woman if it weren't just for show? How many of these girls do you see forming lasting relationships with other women? It's just a little game.

Oh, and everybody in chatrooms lie. Everyone. Yes, even that girl. She was probably a 54-year-old man named Günther. Hope you can handle that.

Yes, it's a trend. They're not freaked out at the thought of kissing another woman, so they do it to be cool. Some of them are probably freaked out, but everyone else is doing it. Just ignore them and be happier for it.

No doubt it's just an expansion of the LUG (lesbian until graduation) phenomenon. People, especially young people emulate what they see portrayed as cool and attention getting.

The OP says it plain and true, bisexual women were considered the holy grail of sex. That obvious popularity is attractive, the heightened level of attention is certainly an incentive. Hell, look at how people dress. You think half that shit is comfortable? If I could be instantly boost my popularity by proclaiming that I'm bi instead of wearing uncomfortable shoes guess which one I'm going to pick.

That having been said the next phase is a series of television shows, magazine articles, and hit songs about how great 19 year old girls are who date 31 year old broke ass men with abs rapidly dwindling.

Agree. I chat online now and then and I don't bother chatting with anyone claiming to be a bi female under the age of 30. At least 95% of the time it's a man!!

Hey, my SO seems to find it hot.

(Of course, I didn't come to terms with my bisexuality until I was 23, and only had 1 relationship with another woman, and I'm one of those odd 'monogamous' bisexuals and won't bring another girl to our bed, so maybe I'm not the best example).

If you think you've got it bad, I'm a lesbian (with no signs or real hopes of changing) and college age. Just trying to find my way between the 'real' bisexual and lesbian women and those who are into it for show is a pain. One of my friends who was a loud and proud (to the point of being obnoxious) lesbian just started dating another friend of ours who is male. And trying to explain the difference between "not horrified by the thought of kissing women" and "honestly attracted to women" is too much trouble. I just smile and nod as 90% of my female friends declare their bisexuality.

The only part that bothers me is when someone uses "Well I'm bisexual" as an excuse between homophobic or borderline homophobic statements. Usually towards "real" lesbians who clearly should be quiet about all this gay rights stuff, or "real" gay men who should stop flaunting it. Gaaaah.

Not that all bisexuals this age are like that. My current girlfriend is not, for instance.

Wow. So they were once rare and valuable, and now they're common and worthless. Kinda like the stuff in the market? What kind of sick sentiment is that? Maybe I'm reading you wrong...

As for this phenomenon you're a little late in your rant. At least 100 years too late. Here's some information to put all this in context:

Books: Dangerous Intimacies: Toward a Sapphic History of the British Novel

The Secret Lives of Girls: What Good Girls Really Do--Sex Play, Aggression, and Their Guilt

Anthropological Aspects Regarding Lesbianism

Quote:
Homosexuality has existed since the beginning of time, but it was never a major issue until the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century when "experts" began to explore the subject. In fact, during the 19th century, although there was some ambivalence, young women were advised not to give up their female friends, but to keep activities such as "kissing and caressing" away from the eyes of men. Not because these activities were threatening, but because they were provocative and intriguing to men.
History of the Bisexual Movement

Quote:
The contemporary bisexual movement began in the early 1970s, although earlier communities of bisexuals did exist, such as the Bloomsbury community of artists & writers at the turn of the century.
Finally, just last week I read in Promiscuities : The Secret Struggle for Womanhood by Naomi Wolf that she and her friends practice kissing while putting a plastic bag between their lips and tongues. As far as I can tell in my studies of Women's History (which I am pretty well versed in) female bisexual experimentation cycles in popularity, though it is always present.

Many of us have gone underground, choosing to hide ourselves as "lesbian-identified bisexuals" in order to avoid the objectifying of ourselves and our sexual identity as has happened in this thread.

Others' MMV, of couse.

People are more open about it these days. Thats why there seems to be more of us about. Oh and MrSarcasticus I take offence that you're suggesting its a fashion statement.

Yeah, but for a lot of chicks the appearance of bisexuality is a fashion statement. Straight chicks on bars kissing each other, touching each others' breasts and giggling a lot. I've read people's profiles which say, "I'm straight, but I like kissing girls" which seems to me to be like "I'm a straight guy but I love sucking cock."

I've known I was bisexual since before I hit puberty, and these "bi until graduation" and "I kiss girls because it gets me more dates/gets my boyfriend off" rack me right off. Not to mention the huge number of "bisexual" girls who say "...but I could only have an actual relationship with a guy."

I don't take offense at someone suggesting that it's a fashion statement; I take offense at the fact that so often that's true.

A bisexual friend of mine was recently dumped by another bisexual friend of mine. Why? Bi-Girl B had just found her ex-boyfriend again, and basically said the kind of relationship she had with Bi-Girl A just couldn't compare.

Bleh.

I guess the root of it is a major misconception:

Correct:
bisexual woman = woman who is sexually attracted to men and women

False:
bisexual woman = woman who will have sex with a guy and another woman at the same time

So because I'm a teen girl and say I'm bi, I'm just being trendy?

Right, thanks. I'm sure you know much more about my sexuality than I do.

I know there are girls that claim to be bi just because they think it's cool, but it's silly to assume they all are.

It's quite possible that part of the reason you see more bi females (whether they really are or not..) is that it's become more acceptable for females to be more open about sex and what they want.

I only take offense at someone suggesting it's a fashion statement when it feels they're also implying that that's the only reason I say I'm bisexual.

No. But a lot of your fellows might be. And most of the teenagers I knew who came out as bi were. I'm 21, so I'm still safely in the "lesbian until graduation" range of age. But I'm not something like that, I'm just gay and that's how I am. You could easily be the same, and nobody's said that's not a possibility. Only that along with honest to goodness bisexuals we now seem to have a crowd of pseudo-bisexuals or something. I tend to refer to myself as "gay" rather than "lesbian" because for some reason people seem to take that word more seriously. YMMV.

Uh...who said that? Because I've read this entire thread twice, and I didn't see anyone say that. I saw people suggest that some, perhaps even many, teenaged girls who say they are bisexual are either confused or exaggerating/outright lying for effect, but I didn't notice anyone saying anything like "Any and all teenaged girls who say they are bisexual are just trying to be cool".

Teenaged girls who say they are bisexual, dye their hair red, and wear lots of tacky silver jewelry are a different story, but I'm sure even then there must be a few sincere ones.

I think people should not jugde the sexuality of others.

Most of the comments I've read in this thread about teen "bisexuals" is doing just that.

I thought the entire point was to do your own thing and let others do theirs. Practice what you preach.

Im glad you put that last line in or I'd have been DEEPLY ofended. I've been dying my hair red for two years, and have been out as bi sexual to my close friends, and boyfriend for almost a year. (I don't usually wear silver jewelry though.) I'M BI SEXUAL - IT IS NOT A FASHION STATEMENT.

Exactly. Unless it's your own personal relationship that's getting messed with by somebody's less-than-wholehearted devotion to hetero-/bi-/homo- sexuality, it ain't anyone's damn business but theirs.

You're right, nobody did say that. I'm just a bit defensive because of all of the comments (most of them assumptions or generalizations) that I have heard from so many people.

I know quite a few supposedly bi teenage girls don't have any real interest in women, and like most people, it seems, I'm tired of it. They make folks wary of dating genuine bisexuals and just make us look bad.

Ah, but it's the silver jewelry that's the biggest giveaway! It can't be just any silver jewelry though, it's got to be both big and tacky. It's been my experience that the sort of young woman who will say any old thing for attention/shock value (e.g. "I'm a bisexual vegetarian Buddhist vampire!", apologies to any real bisexual vegetarian Buddhist vampires out there) is often the sort of young woman with an unusual fondness for big, tacky silver jewelry. Maybe it's to ward off werewolves.

But still, you can never be sure until you actually get to know a person. Some people just have bad taste in accessories, after all.

I am the very model of a trendy faux bisexual
I dress in black to show that I'm a tortured intellectual
My piercings have gone septic but at least I'm not respectable
I think that labels stink and that Nutella is delectable

My S.O. is a motos, like the last one and the one before
I touched a boy in college but I don't do that anymore
Now boys are just for hugging, if they get too fresh they're out the door
I hate it when a guy wants sex, that outlook is a major bore...
