I am a purist and think that Cadillacs should be the long regal air craft carriers of the highway. It just doesn't seem right that they can be snub nosed down to look like one of those Euro-trash Beemers.

That's just my opinion.

Hello, it is your Euro-trash friend Coldfire here. All American cars are crap!

This is just my opinion.

(Well, OK, I DID book a test drive in a Chrysler PT Cruiser, just because it looks so cool. I hope it can live up to its so-called "European handling" since most American cars tend to be comfortable, but they mostly steer like pigs.)

I had to rent a car one day. A 1999 Cadillac Coupe de Barge, or something like that, with a big V-8 and all the goodies.

Hated it. It was too big to be on the road. Considering most people drive alone, it was wasted space.

The next day I took it back and got a Neon. It handled better.

While driving in my Cadillac
What to my surprise
A little Nash Rambler was following me
About one third my size.
The guy must've wanted to pass me up
'Cause he kept on beeping his horn
I'll show him that a Cadillac
Is not a car to scorn...

Beep beep
Beep beep
His horn went beep beep beep.

(Haven't though of that song in over twenty years, and now it'll be in my head ALL DAY.)

I usually carry my own clubs. That said, when I’m on vacation and decide to treat myself, I prefer a old caddie. Not only are they usually more familiar with the course (distance to pin, course hazards, etc.), they tell the greatest stories.

The downside is that by not using young caddies, I’ll never be able to say that the next Tiger Woods once caddied for me, but there you go.

How thoughtful of you to share the experience with the rest of us. Now we'll all be hearing it . . . unless . . .

Punch, brothers! punch with care!

[i]My love is bigger than a Honda;
Yeah, it's bigger than a Subaru.
Well, Man there's only one car,
Yeah one car that'll do;
Well Baby we don't have to drive it
We can park it out in back
And have a party in our pink Cadillac...[i]

Hey, big ol' gas guzzling luxury cars are what made America great! Bring back the Packard, sez I!

If I had some money,
I'd tell you what I'd do
I'd go downtown
Buy a Mercury or two. . .

Nice to see someone else thought of the golf joke so I didn't have to bring it up. I think I'm already earning a reputation as a wierdo.

That said, I like Cadillacs. Expensive, but generally a very good, very smooth car. Being the off-roader that I am, I prefer Jeeps, but hey.

I'm a small care man, myself. My dream care would be ...

Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a Thunderbird like it's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got

I'll tell you son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin'
If you don't stop racin' that hot rod Lincoln.

(Apologies if the words are off; I haven't actually heard that song in years.)

Cadillac, Cadillac
Long and dark, shiny and black
Open up your engines, let 'em roar
Tearin' up the highway like a big ol' dinosaur

I don't think there's a hotter looking car than a 1959 Cadillac De-Ville Convertible. The tail fins are beyond classic.

It's My pappy said son, you're gonna drive me to drinkin'.

For me,

Parked in a rickety old garage
Is a brand new, shiny red, Super Stock Dodge

Spoke, I saw a beautiful yellow '36 Packard roadster at the grocery store on Sunday. In perfect condition.

Yeah, I'd rather have a real Cadillac, covered with half an acre of chrome, tailfins up to my eyeballs, and a 400 horsepower engine that gets an honest 9 miles per gallon.

All Dutch cars are crap!

Are they?

http://www.texnet.net/alinks/cacars/...s/volvoV40.jpg

And although it is no match for my Peugeot in terms of handling, it beats any (comparable, of course) American car hands down when it comes to cornering...

Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate a bit of comfort in a car. And I also can appreciate those huge classic American V8 fuel burners with tailfins a meter high, etc. But I fail to see why you people take crap roadholding for granted up till this day.

A few weeks ago, BBC's Top Gear tested a top-of-the-line Cadillac (I don't know what type that is, but it's the big-ass one). They thought it was luxurious, comfy, quiet, speedy on the straights, great brakes, the works. But take it out on a winding road and all of those great impressions go straight out the window. That car was sliding all over the place! They compared it to a Bentley, which was almost twice the weight: the Bentley was much more agile through the bends, and felt like a lighter car overall.

This is the major problem European people have with American cars: in general, they handle poorly. Most of them also look, well, American. Not to offend anyone, but most American cars are considered somewhat tacky.

And all that did not change the fact that I'm giving that PT Cruiser a SERIOUS try when it will arrive this summer

...and they're ugly, too!

Yeah, so are most of today's U.S. cars. That's what this thread's about, remember? When a Cadillac was a work of art. Spoke mentioned the Packard. I'm partial to the Chrysler 300C and 300F. And I'd love to go for a ride in a Deusenberg Model J.

Handling isn't generally an issue here: the interstates aren't known for hairpin curves. Still, I think it was a mistake to switch to front-wheel drive: all the weight is concentrated in the front end, and any engine with more than 4 cylinders is a nightmare to work on. I refuse to own a front-wheel driven vehicle.

Unfortunately, there aren't many rear-drive choices left among U.S. cars: the Ford Mustang, the Chevy Camaro, and the Pontiac Firebird (which are probably the best-handling U.S. vehicles) come to mind. Are the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Lincoln Town Car still rear-driven?

Maybe you like the PT Cruiser for its retro appeal: it resembles a '37 Ford.

I do love Packards.

When I was in high school, my Dad had a '38 Packard which he kind of piddled around with, but never finished restoring. I had visions of finishing it out at some point, but then he sold it while I was in college out of state. I was crushed!

Most Volvos are Swedish. But the S40 and V40 (the one above) are produced in Born, the Netherlands. They are completely designed and developed here, and have no connection to the Swedish Volvos other than the name (the shares of NedCar, the factory producing Dutch Volvos, are owned for 33% each by respectively Mitsubishi, Ford and the Dutch State).
www.nedcar.nl (Although the link didn't appear to work when I just checked)

Anyway, feel free to talk about Caddies now
