Teeth and bottle caps

How do you remove bottle caps with your teeth, not the twist caps but the ones you usually need a bottle opener for i've ssen it done before how is done? any diagrams or guides to doing etc. would be good. also is there any damage caused by it or major risks involved?

I chipped a molar like that once, in my youth.

It's not a good a idea.

Never tried it, never will. Use a desk (bob).

Another vote for "don't." Chipped an incisor engaged in a similar activity.

I've seen Weirddave do it with little apparent effort. Perhaps he'll drop by and enlighten us.

I chipped a tooth doing this too. Actually, I thought it was a twist-off which was being stubborn.

I can open a bottle in a five seconds or so with a regular house key. Just find a pointy part of the pattern and hook it under one of the raised parts on the cap's crimping and twist the key so the lug stretches out. Move to the neighbouring section and do it again. You might have to do a third one. Then you will have a section of the cap that is splayed out. You just hook your thumb under it, and flip the cap off.

Another way is to hook the cap over the edge of a solid object with a well-defined edge (the top of a locker works well), so that the bottle is being held in one hand in front of the object. With your other hand, pound down on the top of the cap, and it should come off. This needs to be done carefully to avoid chipping the glass.

Or you could just use a bottle opener.

But save your teeth.

Don't do it!

I can just imagine the pain of an incisor cracking into the root.

Yikes!

The proper technique for removing a bottle cap with your teeth involves loosening the cap first while no one is looking. This impresses women who have no front teeth of their own.

i can do that! but my teeth are now worn down on the right side (i'm right handed). so i also suggest not to do it.

but if you must, just use the tooth just behind your pointy canine tooth, get it under the top, and pull the bottle up.

I cracked a molar on a cap, and it didn't hit the root, but one corner wiggles. Not bad pain, but a twinge whenever hot or cold drinks hit it.
The dentist always wants to cap it, but I can't afford that, and don't want it pulled.

I've done the ever impressive bite-and-spit, but would not reccomend anyone else duplicating this stupid stunt. It really does hurt your teeth, and is not worth 2 seconds of "glory". Any pain that one might experience afterward is a shining example of why one shouldn't subject themself to this sort of damage.

Some beers have softer caps. Red Stripe, I think, is one. At least it was that way in Jamaica. I think. For some reason, my memory is a little spotty...

It's not hard, really, and it dosen't hurt at all. The trick is that you don't "pry" the cap off on your teeth, you grab the cap firmly between your back teeth, and gently pull the bottle away. You use your teeth like a pair of pliars in other words. DON'T do it unless you have a very firm grip on the cap. If you've got that, it's a piece of cake, bottle caps are aluminum and they bend easily.

As I get older I tend to favor the "use a bottle opener" method, however.

I used to do this at will (before I grew up!) but don't fancy the dental expenses these days. I used to find that the best way was to twist the cap slightly (using molars) and then use the same teeth to peel the cap off from one edge.

I was watching some dodgy Guiness World Records show and I saw a guy (Scandinavian I think) breaking the world record for most caps removed in a minute and the amount of blood coming from his mouth was far from appealing. Can't remember what the record was but I'm sure someone could google it.

You can do it if your teeth are coincidentally positioned and sized to fit exactly into the ridges. However, if there's the slightest deviance, you will chip the enamel. I used to do it all the time with no effort at all, but then one day I had the fucker positioned wrong, and badabing, I chipped a molar.

I did it all the time before rehab, it's easy as pie if you do it right. Weird Dave has it right, you use your teeth to "grab" the cap and then apply pressure to the bottle... well Dave says it better.. I've never chipped a tooth or bled or had any problems at all but it is horrible to see "amateurs" use their front teeth and/or generally using silly methods. If you don't do it right you will very probably chip a tooth and I really can't see what is to be gained from opening bottles this way. Yes, I used to do it, but then I was a silly young man/drug fiend.

No offense, but probably not a terrific idea to take drinking advice from the fella whose post begins with "before rehab".

I use my teeth on twist-offs, because I've got soft dainty hands... anyone done damage like that?

(I grip the cap between upper and lower molars and twist the bottle).

A friend of mine tried this, not only did he chip his tooth, but the neck of the bottle busted too and he got a nasty cut in his mouth. Worst of all, since the bottle was busted he had to throw the whole beer away. Tragic.

Well, frankly, who would be a better, more informed choice!?
