Herbs 'purify the blood?

If you read the descriptions of curative herbs, every so many herbs you find one that "purifies the blood". What does that mean?

I understand trying to use herbs to cure headaches, for cuts or burns, as diuretics, laxatives, etc. But how would they define purifying the blood?

Only if they improve the functioning of your kidneys.
