Around ten years ago there was a band called Mr. Bungle that would play a great version of the Mario theme. They were a lot of fun.

Just came in to ask the same question But I was impressed by the “Star” stage there… And their parents said that playing video games would never be useful.

A few of my percussionist friends and I had a nagging idea about the Mario music. After a year of thinking about it, we finally got our act together, found some music, figured out the rest, and arranged it for mallet percussion and trap set. It was a medley of themes from the first three games- chronologically arranged, of course, with the starman and underworld themes, as well. We performed it in an ensemble competition and in a talent show. We received a superior rating at the competition, first place at the talent show, and a standing ovation at both events. Some good times.

Ah, that ain’t nuthin’. A friend of mine has MP3s of all the music from SMB as performed by a full orchestra. Apparently, a few years ago, it was the musical event of the season in Japan.
Damn that looks fake… Can’t really tell, though.
