What effect will this have on the elections? Who do you expect will replace him?

I just saw; this is pretty unexpected, isn’t it? No idea what’ll happen with it. The next couple days might be interesting.

The Chalabi/Iran issue might have been the final straw.
Wow. Intelligence failures on 9/11 and Iraq’s WMDs weren’t enough to sink Tenet. What was? And will we find out?
Tenet has certainly been a useful (and willing) person to blame things on for the Bush admin. What was the last straw that caused the Bush admin to heave him over the side?
Sure they’re personal reasons. Such as the fact that he “personally” endorsed Chalabi, who turned out to be a spy…
He’s tanned, rested, ready, and experienced. George H. W. Bush
“Personal reasons,” eh? Is that the new “wanted to spend more time with his family”?
Good riddance. Now lets hope Rumsfeld, Cheney and Rice follow suit.
Yup. Personal reasons.
And in other news, monkeys just flew outta my butt…
Then perhaps we’re seeing a replay of the “it’s all my (Tenet’s) fault GW lied in the SOTU speech” event of a few months ago. Which would mean we should expect some damning evidence of Chalabi’s malfeasance (more than the hints we’ve seen to date) to come to light fairly soon, to be conveniently pinned on Tenet.
To answer the OP, the effect on the elections will be seen by a) how damning those revelations are (if they come) and b) how well the “Tenet did it!” story can be sold.
OTOH, I see today that the POTUS has retained council in the Plame case, which involves the felonious outing of a CIA operative – someone who worked for Tenet – so you have to wonder if the two events are connected.
Holy horse hockey.
I hope this really is for “personal reasons.” Cuz if it isn’t, something huge is about to blow.

He did? Do you have a citation for this support?
As for his replacement, it looks like his immediate replacement will be John McLaughlin.

Yes, I think that’s the case. If for no other reason than that the story is coming out at this time. The traditional time to announce bad news is Friday afternoon, right at the deadline for the evening news, so that only the admin’s spin will be heard and reporters can’t follow up until Monday, at which point either the “good” story is already out there or everyone had forgotten and we’re in the next news cycle. This story coming out on a Thursday morning seems decidedly odd, and indicates that it’s happening ahead of events that are not in control of the administration.

Nothing on the CIA website yet.
Do we know if Tenet has testified to the Plame grand jury, and, if so, when?
I’m googling and not finding anything, by I have some vague memory of reading something to this effect in the last couple of weeks.
On the gripping hand, perhaps the Bush admin has decided that Al Gore isn’t insane.
Am I right in remembering that Tenet is the one who told Bush that the case for Iraqi WMD was a “slam dunk”? At least, according to (IIRC) Woodward?
Thanks for the link, Left Hand of Dorkness. This is pretty unexpected. And it makes me wonder if Rumsfeld might be next. I didn’t expect Tenet to resign, although he should; I didn’t expect Rumsfeld to resign, although he should.
Or maybe Powell will be next to leave. Although that is less likely.

I haven’t seen anything to the effect that Bush actually retained outside council; only that he had consulted with an outside lawyer.
