O.K. so, there was no way the new show Quintuplets would be anything other than complete crap- it was obvious from the promos. I watched it because Andy Richter is in it and I love him.
It was complete crap. I mean really bad. Each of the quintuplets sucks, not a decent character among them. The actress that plays the wife was pretty cool and she and Richter were pretty good together but it is a show that revolves around the quintuplets, as the title would suggest, and the quintuplets just suck. And the writing just sucks. And the concept just sucks. And the show just sucks.
I do like Andy Richter though. I wish someone had written him a laugh line or two.
It’s just sad that Andy went from a show that was, I’m assuming, way to clever for most people, into the millionth sitcom about a dysfunctional family unit. I mean, honestly, how many different ways can the sitcom with the “buffoon husband”, “cute quirky naive wife”, and “incorrigible children”, be made, week after month after year after decade, into something fresh? It’s just sad. But because it’s such a cliche, except for the quintuplets part, it will probably trod on for years, like all the other sitcoms with the same generic family formula that I don’t know who watches but which seem to last forever, and all the utterly braindead people who report to the Nielsens which seems to control most of network programming, will watch it because it’s not too complicated, or startlingly new, or “weird”, or whatever people must have said about “Andy Richter Controls the Universe”. Poor Andy, maybe he’ll end up back on Conan where he can be funny again.
Even if this show sucks, it may last a while. Either way I doubt he’d ever go back to Conan. It’s been a long time and would reek of desperation, and I don’t think Richter would want to be a supporting player again. Plus we don’t know how much longer Conan will have his show. He’s been doing Late Night for ten or eleven years, he’s not going to get Leno’s spot any time soon, and he may be looking at offers from ABC and FOX. NBC has neglected him a bit.

Ah, but even if this show is good the quintuplet characters are supposed to be 15yr olds. They’ll be graduating highschool in three years, at which point sitcom familes inevitably fall apart. The producers must have just accepted from the get-go that this show had no future, otherwise they wouldn’t have limited themselves so much. (6 year old quints would have been much cuter.)
That 70s Show is still going somehow, isn’t it?
I doubt it, although three years isn’t bad in this business. And a sitcom featuring five six-year-olds would’ve had no comedic material at all. This is not a cute era we’re living in; that wouldn’t have worked. The very idea is making me queasy.
Yeah, but T7S was always a show about the group of kids, it was never a family sitcom, parents and siblings were always peripheral characters. Quintuplets is very specifically a family sitcom, it revolves around the family unit. Although three years may be a pretty good run, I think the show would fall apart once circumstances forced the formula to change.
Personally I don’t doubt in the least that anyone involved in this project (except maybe the child actors) isn’t perfectly aware that this show has no future. It’ll fill a few holes in the schedule through the summer, but I’ll be surprised if it’s on in the fall.
Although, I stand by my earlier statement that 6yr old quints would be cuter, I see that I may have lead you to believe that I think this would make a good show. No way. You’re absolutely right, no comedic material at all.
Basically, the concept just sucks no matter what age you put them at because they will all always be the same age as each other. They’ll all always be at the same level developmentally, they’ll all have a similar perspective on things, they’ll all face the same issues at the same times. There’s no opportunity to set up the dynamics and contrasts that are available in a sitcom with different aged siblings.
Yes, having a family with quintuplets is a unique spin on the old family sitcom formula, and they will be able to get a little mileage out of that. But, although it is a unique spin, it just isn’t a spin that has much potential.
The only hope for success would be to gain an enthusiastic teenage audience since the show stars five teenagers. The casting isn’t strong enough to pull this off. There are two cool and popular quints and three misfits. The actors who play the cool kids are attractive in only a very bland way, and they have no charisma. They certainly won’t be winning the hearts of America’s teens.
God, this show just sucks.
It sucks really bad.
