I heard this on the radio and found a related site to it, but another list of favorite movies has come out. Comedy.

What are you top ten Funny Movies?

My partial list:

1)Tootsie
2)Duck Soup
3)Ferris Bueller
4) His Girl Friday
5) Philadelphia Story.

Yeah, I saw that list...not a bad list, compared to that dismal "100 Best All-Purpose Films" list that came out last year. Sure, it includes shit like BIG and GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM, but it's got five Marx Bros. movies, and four each from Keaton and Chaplin.

So I have to pick five, huh? I'll go with

1. SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959)
2. ARSENIC AND OLD LACE (1944)
3. TO BE OR NOT TO BE (1942)
4. A SHOT IN THE DARK (1964)
5. THE PRODUCERS (1968)

These are what I consider the most enduringly funny of the situation comedies, as opposed to vehicles for oddball characters like the Little Tramp or Groucho and Harpo (unless you consider Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau to be one of those types).

Oh, and the first ten or fifteen minutes of RAISING ARIZONA (1987) may be the funniest ten or fifteen minutes in movie history. The rest of the flick doesn't live up to the opening, but NOTHING could.

I'm actually surprised SOME LIKE IT HOT and TOOTSIE were the top two. They're OK, but there are many better comedies (especially better than TOOTSIE). There was also a problem with the list in definition; quite a few of the films were not strictly comedies.

My choices:

1. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (only because it was on the list -- I consider it a musical, not a comedy).
2. CITY LIGHTS
3. DUCK SOUP
4. BRINGING UP BABY
5. THE GENERAL
6. AIRPLANE
7. LOVE AND DEATH (Woody Allen's funniest)
8. THE HEARTBREAK KID
9. THE BANK DICK
10. HIS GIRL FRIDAY
11. GALAXY QUEST

  • Animal House- ("Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son")
  • Fast Times at Ridgemont High- ("I know that dude!")
  • Raising Arizona- ("You ate sand??")
  • Stripes- (By the way, did y'all hear that Tito Puente died last week? You know, I've been listening to his stuff for years...)
  • Something About Mary- ("These are love blisters!")
  • American Pie- ("What's my name? Say it, bitch!")
  • Caddie Shack- ("It looks good on you, though!")
  • Ferris Bueuller- ("Oh, Ed! You sounded just like Dirty Harry when you said that!")
  • Sixteen Candles- (*BONG!* "What's happening, hot stuff?")
  • The General, with Buster Keaton- (" ")

Top five comedies, huh?[list][*]Love and Death-the only comedy based on 19th century Russian literature[*]Blazing Saddles-Pass the beans[*]Monty Python and the Holy Grail-Supreme executive power is derived from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony[*]There's Something About Mary-the hair gel scene[*]To Be or Not To Be- The Jack Benny version is much funnier than the one with Mel Brooks

I may be a lowbrow, but I really hadn't laughed as hard at anything in years as I did at "There's Something About Mary." "A can of whoop-ass" is now permanently in my vocabulary.

I like all of "Raising Arizona" ("son, you've got a panty on your head") but only because I accept it as a total work. It's not without problems. The whole Randell Tex Cobb character is ambiguous. But anyway.

Some other favorites:
* Beetlejuice
* Soap Dish
* The Princess Bride

Here's a link one of many site's that gives the complete list:

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/2000...medy_dc_2.html

As for my choices, hmmm...

-Monty Python an dthe Holy Grail
-Caddyshack
-Blues Brothers
-Philadelphia Story
-(this spot reserved depending on my mood)

I watched the last 25 or so on the list last night, and thought it was much more entertaining than the general one. It seemed like every movie they mentioned we were like "oh yeah, I forgot that one" and then started madly quoting the movie.

One question though. Why Drew Barrymore as the host?

The Seven Year Itch

It's my granddaughter's favorite. She likes to see Marilyn Monroe fluster Tom Ewell without even knowing she's on his mind.

(My granddaughter is starting to be a tease herself.)

You've already picked a lot of my favorites. But can't believe no ne picked these:

1.) A Night at the Opera (the best Marx Brothers, IMHO)
2.) What's Up, Doc (I don't care what anyone says -- it's not a remake of Bringing up Baby)
3.) The General (a clasic! If you haven't seen it, discover the wonder of Keaton)
4.) Airplane! (Stupid but funny)
5.) A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
6.) Arsenic and Old Lace

1. Bringing up Baby (Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn)
2. Arsenic & Old Lace (Cary Grant)
3. What About Bob (Bill Murray)
4. Seems Like Old Times (Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase)
5. Once Upon a Crime (Cybil Shepherd, Jim Belushi)
and I've got to stick one more in here, just because it cracks me up, especially the scene where the FBI is dressed as clowns...Jim Belushi's character says with dread, 'Oh no the clown attack!" Real Men

Let's see...In no order, and in no way comprehensive...

1. Coming To America

2. American pie

3. Monty Python and the Holy Grail

4. Weekend at Bernie's

5. The Naked Gun

Do standups count? Like Delerious or Unnatural Act?

IMHO, I think the Farrelly Brothers are overrated.

"It's funny...just not HA-HA funny."

And I think Dead Man On Campus is underrated.

Top six

Animal House (sad that I can recite more lines of this from memory than Shakespeare--yes, tis true)

(big, big gap)

Life of Brian/Holy Grail (tie)

Kentucky Fried Movie (the game show during "A Fistful of Yen and the obvious mouthing [in slow motion of "what the fuck?" are hilarious)

Amazon Women on The Moon

Ferris Bueller (My favorite scene is when they show that stretch of road, then you hear the Star Wars music and they have this big assed shadow of the car going over the hill. Makes me laugh inappropriately when I hear the Star Wars theme)

For out-and-out gut-wrenching laughs, Airplane!. I literally couldn't breathe at times the first time I saw it, and it remains funny after multiple viewings.

For humor within the framework of a clever plot, Ruthless People.

So many other good ones also already mentioned.

Top Secret. It's got to be Top Secret. Because:

1) The German bad guys have a "Find him and kill him" rubber stamp.

2) The hero wakes from a dream where he was back at school to find himself being tortured in a dank cell, and says "thank God!"

3) The blind torturer walks into a concrete post (you have to look out for that one)

4)They shoot a whole scene backwards to make the dialogue sound Swedish.

5)They painted black spots on a real white cow and put boots on its hooves to make it look like a fake cow. And dubbed in human speech.

6) The "big phone" scene is great.

7) The "little horse" pun is awful.

8) They have "The French Resistance" in Germany.

9) The german guards don't hear or see other german guards being noisily killed by the French Resistance three feet away.

10) The love scene panning shots involve more limbs than can be attributed to two people.

If we're keeping this strictly American...(that knocks out all the Monty Python)

The Producers (if it's Mel Brooks, it's almost always gold)
Ghostbusters ("The next time someone asks you if you're a god, you say "YES!")
Some Like it Hot
Army of Darkness ("Gimme some sugar, baby.")
Princess Bride
and just about anything with Laurel and Hardy, silent or talkies.

For movies that haven't been mentioned yet (I think)
*Police Squad: The Naked Gun - the baseball scenes are a hoot and a half.

*A Fish Called Wanda - "every man for himself" is not one of the tenets of Confucianism

*Young Frankenstein - "Put the candle back", "Boy what knockers", " "Igor, get the bags' 'OK, you take the blonde and I'll take the one in the turban!'"

I recently saw "Happy, Texas." I think it will be one of my favorites from now on. William H. Macy is the coolest!

Also, we have:

1. City Slickers ("Have you killed anybody today, Curly?" "Day ain't over yet")
2. Army of Darkness ("Shop smart, shop S-Mart!")
3. The Full Monty ("Anti-wrinkle cream there may be, but anti-Fat-Bastard cream there is none")
4. The Princess Bride ("What about the R.O.U.S's?" "Rodents of Unusual Size? I don't believe they exist." *WHUMP*)
5. The Gods Must Be Crazy
6. The Cable Guy ("Come back so that I may brain thee!")
7. Raising Arizona ("Son, you got a panty on your head.")
8. The Big Lebowski
9. Galaxy Quest ("It's a pile of rocks! It doesn't have a motivation!")
10. Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("Leave, or I will taunt you a second time")

I gotta do this.

1) Any movie by Zucker, Abraham and Zucker, which includes the Naked Gun movies, both Airplanes, Top Secret, and God alone knows what else. The sight gags alone are worth the price of admission.

2) Most Mel Brooks movies. (Blazing Saddles, the Producers, Silent Movie, and, I hate to say it, parts of History of the World, Part I. Yes, I know parts of it were in very bad taste, but lighten up!)

3) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut. I know, it's gross potty humor, but it's also brilliant social commentary if you can handle the gross potty humor.

4) Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. I saw it twice last summer, liked it more the second time, and I bought the movie when it came out. And the first one's good, too.

and finally,
5) Any porno movie. Accidental humor is far and away better than anything intentional.

Robin

I thought that Princess Bride should have made the top 100.
It was a pretty good list overall though if a little heavy on the last couple of decades. It was nice to see the Marx Bros. and the Thin Man on the list.

Million Dollar Legs (1932)
Three-Cornered Moon (1933)
Dinner at Eight (1933)
Palm Beach Story (early '40s)
Midnight (1939)
Airplane! (1980)
Young Frankenstein (1974)
It (1927)

and for my last two choices, almost any top-flight Buster Keaton and/or Max Linder silent.

Naked gun

Airplane

Blazing saddles - I remember thinking how close to the edge the racism was at the town meeting and that made it even funnier

A shot in the dark

Life of Brian - I really liked how grotty and rough it made life appear insead of those idealised and heroic Hollywood toga and sandals movies are.

I know Laurel and Hardy didn't do many feature fims but they still crack me up.

Dirty rotten scoundrels

It's a mad, mad ,mad , mad world.

Cactus Jack

What is the name of that spoof western where they are trying to get a shipment of whisky to town before winter sets in and against the wishes of the womens temperance society ?

Duck Soup - The bit with the missing mirror is brilliant.

Spinal Tap - The movie outcliches every rock cliche there ever was.
