I wasn’t watching the last half hour (as usual, the throwaways are rarely interesting, IMO). What the heck happened with Ashlee Simpson’s second song? I was just listening, and I realized it was the same song she did the first time. By the time I turned around they had the still picture of the Jude Law (the host) on the screen. What it sounded like is they were playing the tape she lip-synched to over the band playing the real second song  . She apologized at the end for “her band playing the wrong song.” What’s the Straight Dope here?
I didn’t see it - but from what I heard it sounds like a bona fide “Milli Vanilli Moment.” Apparently they put in the wrong tape and played the first song she lip sync’d again instead of the second one. Apparently she paniced and ran off stage.
Here’s a video:

Painful to watch.
Oh my God! She actually said “My band started playing the wrong song.” This is her band’s fault? Not hers? Is lip-syncing that standard a practice on the show now?
Um… Actually, I stopped watching after 12:30, because in my area, they have reruns of The West Wing on the ABC affiliate then, and usually nothing of consequence happens in the last half hour of SNL.
Plus, I really don’t like most of their musical guests and haven’t in several years.
You misspelled “in the music industry.”
Wow. Milli Vanilli redux! Here’s hoping this is a big setback for crappy music.
Unfortunately I can’t view the AVI.
lol and the edited version:

I just read someone claim that many times lip-synching is requested by bands and singers when their performance venue doesn’t have enough I/O ports for everybody’s equipment. True or no?
(I can’t imagine SNL wouldn’t have enough, given how important their musical guest has been to the show these past thirty years, but still, just curious.)
Am I the only one who thought she looked like a monkey when she was “dancing” or doing whatever it was that she was doing?
HA-ha.
That was a very interesting/painful moment.
What I found very strange was the fact that since SNL is pre-recorded earlier in the day it could of been easily edited out, but it wasn’t.
You sure about that? I’m fairly certain it’s aired live, at least for the Eastern and Central time zones.
As far as the rest of the country is concerned? Yeah I guess it could have been edited out, but thanks to Tivo and the internet there’s really no point trying to cover it up.
I searched the web looking for another way to view the AVI file and found her web site. A poster there said it was removed for the West Coast and her apology (or whatever it was) was aired. It’ll be on the news and the web anyway, for all the good it’ll do…
Your links aren’t working.
I thought that defeated the “Live” part of the title. Is this really true?
I just saw the edited west coast version. They left out the taped singing completely, but left in the instrumentals, and monkey dancing, and the walking off stage. In that context, the statement that her band played the wrong song sort of makes sense. It’s hard to believe that they think they can cover their tracks like that.
Here’s another:

Since I could watch the same episode repeatedly through the night through “time-shifting” on my satellite service, it couldn’t be live.
In fact I missed the original show, and my brother told me about it. We than watched it again an hour and a half later.
I figure since Conan/Letterman/Leno are all pre-recorded (Conan’s set being in the same building as SNL) so is SNL.
For example, Jimmy Kimmel “Live” WAS live for a month or so, but they soon changed that after it was less prone to error.
I guess, I am basing my conclusions off evidence, not facts.
Thanks, but it’s not working either
I bet they’re all being flooded.
