To Democrats: An open invitation

Not excatly a rant…

Today is a new day, well actually it is the same crap as before except no one is asking for your vote. A time for reflection for those voters out there. Those who may wonder what does the United States under 4 more years of Bush hold for me?

To those disillusioned Democrats I offer you a modest proposal.

Come up to live in Canada. We offer a good economy excellent standard of living, plenty of space and all the opportunities and luxuries you enjoy in the United States.
Sure, our taxes are a pain and the weather can be a tad cold in winter, but in the plus side, the fundies don’t have the government’s ear, we have universal health care, cheaper drugs, no vocal pride in anti intellectualism and of course you still get all those US programs and movies.

Right now we do fight the War on Terror but are not in Iraq. We have a global view and a less (well slightly less) partisan media. We are working on granting rights to people regardless of sexual orientation in regards to marriage. Yes there is a split on it in public but the government and courts seem to be having the guts to uphold the ideals of our charter of rights and freedoms because they are right.

Our country is vast and varied with a good friendly people.
Here you can enjoy having your political views and not be branded as Anti Canadian because you disagree with the government. In fact, active loathing of the folks in power is seen as very patriotic.

This is not a selfless offer though. We need you. You offer Canada the drive and entrepreneurial spirit of the US, the ideals of Freedom that we also cherish. You represent a new wave of immigrants that will help us grow and thrive as a robust nation.

Most importantly your left politics is in tune with our right wing politics which will finally give us a legitimate right wing to vote for. Heck if you want to set up a Canadian Democratic party all the better. Also many of you from the entertainment industry can help make quality and entertaining Canadian programming. Finally we could watch Canadian TV that isn’t boring or cheap (just don’t touch our hockey programming… It’s not Football damn it!)

Now it won’t be easy at first, there are those pin heads out here who openly slag Americans, the metric system, and of course the whole Zed/Zee thing. But you are American’s you survive and endure just as we do.

Sure being Canadian is not Glamorous, but we are a hearty dependable people. We have a potential of true greatness and with your help maybe we can make the 21st century Canada’s century.

Think about it.

I don’t think your going to like it if all Democrats take you up on this offer.

This is a tempting offer on several levels. I live in Northern Michigan, so your climate holds no fear for me. I love your hockey, though the Maple Leafs (leaves?) can rightly burn in hell. The Kids in the Hall was pretty cool.

However, to leave would be to admit defeat entirely. I would be giving up to the forces that have overtaken politics now. I can’t do that just yet.

Give me two years, then we’ll talk

I love the mountains I live in. I love my family. I love my friends.

These are the only three things that keep me in the United States. WHen I travel to other countries, I am humbled and envious.

Daniel

Thanks for the offer, my friend. Very tempting. But I choose to stay here and fight the good fight… bringing reason and rationality back to America. I have four years to accomplish this!

Truthfully, it would be a tempting offer… except that it would mean abandoning my country to let persons run it in a way I find distasteful. Running away is the easy way out. While I’m not either a Republican or a Democrat, I am still an American, and I won’t abandon my homeland to let it be led by special interest groups, lobbyists, or corporations without a fight.

Both Republican and Democratic polititians care more about keeping the other side from getting what they want than they care about what’s best for the country. Both sides are dividing the country. Part of me wants to blame the right more, but I’m not sure that that’s fair, media blow hards like Limbaugh and Coulter don’t really have a counterpart on the left unless you want to put Michael Moore and/or Al Franken in there.

What we need is a centrist politican party. Unfortunately I don’t think we have much chance to get one.

I would consider it, having friends north of the border. I’d be close to my family in upstate New York. Thing is … I’ve got a great job here, something where I’m probably going to be in Cleveland for the long term. I just bought a house here, which ties me down. Immigration may be difficult; my job is covered under NAFTA, so I can easily take up residence there, but citizenship is a different story.

Let me point out that Canadians and Americans are allowed to hold dual citizenship (as me later how you acquire both, since I’m gonna have to go through that process for Baby Barbarian), and as such, could then vote in both countries.

Thanks, but I just joined Hillary 08. We’re going to be busy.

Tonight’s Agenda:

  • Photocopy Bush Impeachment Petitions, distribute.
  • Prepare list of safe-havens for foreign tourists who still might want to visit the US; West Coast, Northeastern Metropolitan cities, Chicago, Mall of America, Wisconsin Dells, Las Vegas and southern tip of Florida.
  • Create US Tourist Ambassador organization to inform the rest of the world that really, only about 51% of this country is certifiably stupid.
  • take courses in NASCAR slang so we can fake being stupid enough to communicate with dolts from the red states.

We will be having a membership drive during our January anti-inaugaral Ball, so feel free to drop by.

OK you have my attention…I’ve had enough…if it was just me and the missus, fine…but we’ve found ourselves with a relative’s children and quite frankly, I can’t stand to be in the country right now. Christ when grown people make war on CHILDREN because of the color of their skin…it’s time to move. Now with the bannings of SSM, it 1960 again. No thank you. What is wrong with these people?

It seems we’ll have to move back to NYC to be around civilized people again or at least those who have enough ‘decency’ to keep their mouths shut and mind their own business.

I know, I know it’s not everyone…but man it seems that way. I won’t let these kids get damaged and we’re home schooling them now because the attitudes of the teachers are no better than that of the Walmart slaves.

Canada huh…? Tell me more. Links helpful. Seriously.

You mean think a-boat it, don’t you?

I’m pretty sure I’ll be able to adapt to the a-boat thing, but kaylasmom could be iffy.

Hell with it. Save me three seats, and I’ll be up as soon as I get my Lotto payout check (Admittedly, this could be a matter of weeks or even months. The clerks at the convenience store seem to have a difficult time understanding that I’m asking for the WINING ticket when I make my purchase).

This is what the mountains look like where I come from. Well, they’re a 45 minute drive, but that’s pretty close.

Bring your family.

Hell, bring your friends too. Or else I’ll introduce you to some of my friends. They’re pretty nice. Watch out, though, 'cause one of them is kinda needy. I’ll point her out in advance.

Welcome, new wave of entrepreneurial immigrants to my proud city of Calgary!

I’m thinking about it. I thought about it. I’ll muse on it.

Unfortunately, I love my family, I love where I live, I love the culture, the people and even most of the politics, and probably couldn’t move even if I wanted to.

If the draft was instituted, I might go as my young brother-in-law would probably be helped out of the country.

I can’t change the opinions of those who actively voted Bush into office, however, and probably wouldn’t be “giving up” on anything by leaving. There’s no way on earth those closed-minded cross loving cretins would change their minds on things that they made the most important issues for the presidency.

I’m disillusioned. I’m sad. 1960 indeed.

Sam

kingpengvin, that is indeed a kind offer and I will take it under advisement. As a Minnesotan born and bred I too am not frightened by a climate and for many years felt Canada was a viable Plan B, but I will probably not be moving there soon. Unlike some of the sore losers here I have for decades lived in “enemy territory” and have learned to take defeat philosophically.

My oldest daughter, though, decided yesterday she would like to transfer to McGill. Being slow on the uptake but cheap, I said this was a terrific idea since she would get a first class education at a very competitive price. No, I was supposed to rise to her bait so she sighed and quoted something she read recently, “Don’t say you are going to move to Canada if your guy loses because you didn’t do it last time, either.”

Of course they are. Next time, try asking for a winning ticket.

Hmmm I think most American’s think we pronounce it a-boot though I have not heard too many except my Newfie parents use it.

holmes here are a few… I’ll start with a link to Our Charter of rights and Freedoms

Then from the government citizenship and Immigration

And a report of the health benifits

When does my bus leave?

Seriously, it’s something I’d like to explore as a possibility. Confession of ignorance time: I don’t know how one goes about relocating to another nation. I assume you folks would not care for an unemployed US refugee who is in no personal danger just traipsing up yonder and announcing “Here I am, take care of me”. My employment at present is database design, in FileMaker Pro (I have some limited skills in other database environments but none that would justify my employment on their own).

How would I start the process of seeking Canadian employment? Do y’all have rules that companies have to exhaust native Canadian prospects before considering foreign applicants? I’m monolingual, btw, is that going to weigh heavily against me in any formal way?

I have no legal/financial dependents but I have a girlfriend of dubious employability (multiple sclerosis, on disability). Anyone know if residing outside the US would invalidate my girlfriend’s US Social Security Disability and her workplace long-term disability income?

Hmm. Tempting offer, but I’m not quite prepared to give up on this country just yet.

Ask me again in four years.

Hey, I’m British… I wouldn’t even need a visa!

I’ll take my chances, though. The way I see it, this can go two ways:

  1. Bush will invade another country on the basis of circumstantial evidence, having already swept the principles of international law under the rug- and get impeached;

OR

  1. Things will stay pretty much the same, and the nation will swing back to the left just in time for the next election.

Either way, it won’t be too bad.

I love the New Mexico scenery and environment. I’m pretty happy at the college I’m at.

But I’d looked at (applied to, even) a handful of schools in the UK, and they’re looking mighty good right about now…
