You're a big girl now

I like being able to do something simple that really makes someone’s day. TheLadyLion and I were scheduled to usher in church today but I suggested she sit out as one of her knees is acting up. I already found a volunteer but one of the little girls likes to hand out bullitens so I asked her if she wanted to be an usher with me today. She did. I think Sarah is maybe six so picture Dora the Explorer with glasses and Santa Clause has just told her that the pony he’s leading has her name written on the bow. And the pony’s name is Princess Wildfire. Pincess Glitter Wildfire. We’re talking one happy little girl. Her older sister gets to be an acolyte which is probably why she was so excited about being an official part of the service.

So how did she do?

That’s really cool you asked her to do that. When I was young I hated it when grownups talked down to me, and would have jumped at the chance to do something “adult”.

Maybe, just maybe, you have inspired a future church worker or clergyperson. But wait, are you ELCA or LC-MS?

She did a great job. One of the things I really like about my church, ELCA, is that so many of us get to serve as ushers, lector, communion assistant, assistent minister. The youth acolytes normally serve as crucifer and torch bearers but some of the older kids have served as lector. That was one of the things that made it more appealing to TheLadyLion as when she grew up Catholic girls were not allowed to serve.

Hey, I used to be that girl! I handed out bulletins and picked up the extras that were left in the pews after mass. Mr. Louis was the first real usher that ever asked me if I would like to help with the collections. I was so excited about it! No usher had ever taken her job so seriously ( I was also the first female to do it at my church).

Good for you for asking the girl. I bet she’ll fondly remember you for a long time.
