Forget the Super Bowl, tune in to the PUPPY BOWL!

Animal Planet is showing something called the Puppy Bowl, in which puppies are put into a pen made to look like a football stadium, and we just watch them play around. Sometimes there’s the exciting “Puppy-Cam” where we get a dog’s-eye view of the action. It’s infinitely more adorable than the Super Bowl.

::sob::
I don’t have cable!

I need someone to give me a football-style play by play description of what’s going on.

Vaguely similar to this are the open-top displays in some pet shops that are full of rabbits and/or guinea pigs. The patrons can pet the animals, watch them run around, etc.

I always wanted to drop in one kitten (i.e. an instinctive but harmless predator)and see what effect it would have on the local social order. Pet store clerks I have mentioned this to tend to frown on the notion.

We’re watching it too. They have a “thing” for the water bowls right now.

I came into post about this! I’m glad I’m not the only person watching this.

I was on the phone with my friend and I started the aww’s. I couldn’t figure out what it was for the life of me, I just figured Animal Planet counted on some poor sap like me watching it (they were right!).

Not a pug - a French bulldog pup!

They’re so cute!!!

I love the bowl cam - and, evidently, so do the two golden-mixes who keep “digging” in the water.

This is wonderful. Thanks for calling it to our attention.

I also love the bowl cam.

And that one little black lab puppy is ka-raaaaa-zy.

Illegel use of paw! - 15 yards.

surreal.
What did they do for a halftime show?

Aw, they are so cute. I’d thought from the ads that the puppies were going to be doing something besides hanging around and being puppies, but I guess not.

Not that I am complaining.

Puppy foul! Hee hee hee.

I recorded a couple of hours of Puppy Bowl. My dog loved it! He was nosing the TV screen and trying to look around the back of the set to find the puppies.

It might be time to get him a canine friend.

The Puppy Bowl was hypnotic… if there were a Puppy Channel, I don’t know that I’d be able to turn it off.

I’ll admit it. I’ve recorded it. I figure it’ll be nice to watch when I’ve got an odd amount of time to kill or could do with a cheer-up. Besides, the gentleman and I were joking about the chihuahua pup!

Just… totally bizarre. I knew there would be a thread on this already. Before watching, I wondered how they could stretch such a simple premise out for THREE HOURS. And the solution? They didn’t bother to try anything at all. Just three hours of puppies in a bizarre stadium with camera cuts. Unreal.

Didn’t see it but I think they ripped off the idea from an episode of South Park.

It was the one were the kids tv news show was being out rated by; “Extreme puppy close ups!” or something like that.

I watched it, too. If there were a Puppy channel, or, even better, a Baby Animals channel, I would be so there.

I did wish they had some smaller type puppies, maybe they were afraid of them getting hurt? I wanted dachsunds, poodles, poms, all those little hairy ones, too.

I saw a dachsunds do the agility once. He was so into it, and his ears flew everywhere! You could see he thought he was the Champion! I could watch dachsunds do that for an hour, easily.

Three hours? More like 6! I tuned in at around 3 and it was on! It was so hypnoic! I didn’t want to watch, but I had to! Thank God for commercial breaks or I never would have been able to turn away.

Loved it! Maybe next year there could be a kitty bowl too.

There was a guy who tried to start a Puppy Channel. His story is the first segment in the March 7, 2003 edition of This American Life. (You can listen online via Real Audio for free.)

The channel never really got off the ground, but they do have a website:
